Home DecorColorful Boho Bedroom Makeover May 12, 2016 Well, the ORC hosted by Calling it Home officially ends today and y’all, this has been a crazy ride. As y’all know, I’ve never participated in the challenge before, but decided to since I have sooo many rooms in this new house that need to be put together. Due to other room reveals and two trips in the last six weeks, the vast majority of this boho bedroom came together in the last week. But we made it! If you missed the first five weeks, you can check them out below: Week 1: The Vision Week 2: Planning the Layout Week 3: The Sconces Week 4: Furniture Finds Week 5: Installing the Floral Wallpaper This makeover was a little different than some I’ve done because the before wasn’t horrible. It was just empty! This is one of the rooms we added on when we renovated last summer and fall and it was really a white box with a bed in it. And I knew this space could be so much more! The goal of this room was to give it a dramatic makeover for as little money as possible (budget details to come). Today will be a pretty photo-heavy post and I’ll share a lot of the details throughout the next week. So, let’s take a look, shall we? There’s the money shot where you can see all of the main elements: the rug, the headboard, THAT WALLPAPER, the art…I love how they all play together! Just as I’d pictured. The wallpaper turned out to be the perfect backdrop for this statement room. I love how the color and pattern really anchors the room. As soon as I chose the wallpaper, I knew the headboard needed to be dark. I looked around at different fabrics, but ended up going with this emerald/teal velvet I’ve had stored for years. It’s hard to really get the depth and color of the fabric in pictures, but I love how it looks hunter green in some lights and from some angles. From others, it has more blue. I actually found the abstract art from Marquin Designs late in the game. All of the other major pieces had been picked, but y’all, this piece ended up being the glue that holds it all together. As we were putting some of the pieces in, my husband said, “Man, you really went with color on this one.” If you know him, that’s not necessarily a compliment. But yesterday, he came home from work, saw the whole picture and said it looked so much better all together than he thought it would. I always know if I’ve won him over on my color and pattern mixing, it all worked out well. I decided to keep the bedding really simple. I knew I wanted an all-white base and ended up using the Pottery Barn bedding we got as a wedding present. I still love it! My plan is to change out pillows and throws when I want a change, but for now, I layered my DIY Moroccan Wedding Blanket on the end and went with a super long lumbar. I love the faint stripe and hello, tassels! This pillow makes such a statement for the price. I bought the stripe fabric at Hobby Lobby for $5.99/yard (I needed two yards to make the pillow). I bought the tassels for $1 each at a local discount fabric warehouse. My mom helped me sew and stuff it. For $27, I got this nearly five foot long lumbar that makes such a statement in here! I searched for nightstands at every thrift and antique store I know of, but couldn’t find anything that fit the bill. We needed STORAGE, big time. We also wanted a big, more chest-like piece. We wanted them to match. I’m all for not matching end tables or nightstands, but with how much color and pattern are happening in here, matching felt right. Oh and we didn’t want to spend a lot. We went with two MALM nightstands from IKEA and I love them so much. I made the long leather drawer pulls to spice them up (post on that to come!). While the storage is great, I love having a big surface to style. The sconces against the wallpaper and headboard pop just as I’d hoped. They’re the best $29 purchase I’ve ever made! Because this main wall of the room is so colorful and pattern-filled, I decided to go really soft and neutral with the rest of the space. I made a wall hanging, which I’ll share more about later. I left the curtains white and I love the light filtering through them. They add such softness without competing with the room. I left this chest white. I added a fun tassel and painted some pale blue brush strokes on my white lamp. They add some faint color over here so it coordinates with the rest of the room, but let’s the other wall shine. And one of my favorites things about our little wing here is the view of the bath. The bath will be finished and revealed next, but I love how it already ties together. I love our new room so much! Now, I’d rather hang out here than our living room. I said after I revealed the office/playroom that I wanted to infuse that same level of creativity, color, and pattern elsewhere in the house and this room gives me that same giddy feeling! I can’t wait to move on to the rest of the house! Thanks for touring our bedroom, friends, and for following along on our renovation journey! *** That’s been The White Buffalo motto for the last three years and is still what I’m striving to do each day in our home and with our family. Yes, that often means tablescapes, inspiring interiors, and fun before and after renos. But it also means family. Faith. Joy. Struggles. Laughter. Health. You’ll find a little bit of all of that here as I share how we’re choosing to live with both style and purpose. A huge part of that is our journey toward a more natural life that’s focused on enjoying each and every moment together. A huge thanks to my main blog sponsor that makes this dream of mine possible:
Justynn Yagiela says May 12, 2016 at 9:29 am I really like the brushstrokes on the lamp & the overall pattern mixing and colo scheme. The nightstands arent a right fit for me personally- , I think just becasue the handles pop SO much from the white. However we bought dressers like this for our bedside “tables” too and I think it’s such a great idea. We have such long and narrow room and there was no space for a full sized dress so we bought kids one from Land of Nod! I think you did a fabulous job making this yours in a short amount of time!! Congrats! Reply
Lindsay says May 12, 2016 at 4:04 pm Thanks so much, Justynn! That’s so funny, high contrast with the leather pulls was exactly what I was looking for, haha! I love for every room I do to have a natural element (either leather or wood), and this room was missing that for me until I did the pulls. But that’s what I LOVE about design and personal style! Everyone’s is different and that’s what’s interesting and inspiring 🙂 Reply
Justynn says May 12, 2016 at 4:48 pm Exactly! That’s one thing I love about the ORC too is that I get to check out blogs I don’t normally follow because their style is different than mine. I found a bunch today that I really liked. Maybe not something I’d do at home, but really well pulled together. I already follow your blog though, your dining room light was so perfect I went out and bought it myself! I can’t wait to see you finished kitchen. I love the cabinet color!! Reply

Austin says May 12, 2016 at 12:11 pm Seriously, I couldn’t love this room more if I tried! And of course, my favorite details are the ones you DIY’ed – that tasseled lumbar pillow and the blue striped lamp! I love how you balanced all the bold colors and patterns with clean white walls/drapes/bedding. Makes your room impactful without being stressful. Absolutely love the finished product! Bravo. Reply

Lindsay says May 12, 2016 at 4:08 pm Thanks sooo much! you always leave the sweetest comments 🙂 It’s stuffing and was $3.99 a bag at Hobby Lobby. It took three bags to fill this pillow. Reply

Erin says June 1, 2016 at 2:21 pm This room is beautiful, but the painting above the bed is really throwing me off! I feel like it’s too modern to compliment the boho vibe and is not the right size either. Plus it distracts from the gorgeous wallpaper! Ah sorry! Love everything else 🙂 You have great style! Reply
Lindsay says June 3, 2016 at 7:15 am To each their own, Erin! It’s my favorite part 🙂 Mixing styles is my trademark. I LOVE modern mixed with boho. Thanks though! Reply
