UncategorizedOpen Shelving in the Kitchen and Some Updates June 18, 2013Over the last week, we have worked and worked and worked. And when we were finished, we worked some more. We have been trying to finish up basic things and get to the decorating and normal life part. A bit part of finishing up was installing the kitchen shelves. I had the best time styling them and know they will probably change in another week. That’s one of the biggest reasons I wanted open shelving…pretty displays that could be changed with the seasons or whenever the mood struck me. These are still in progress and don’t feel “finished” to me, but I’ve been dying to start sharing “pretty” not just renovation progress with y’all that I’m going ahead. I knew I wanted white shelves on the white beadboard so that the display items really stood out. I looked at a lot of different bracket options, but in the end, these stainless ones from IKEA gave me the modern punch I was looking for. {via} I talked here about bringing brass into this white and stainless kitchen. My plan was to paint these a brass color along with the cabinet hardware. I was very inspired by this picture. {via} And remember this hardware I was going with? Well, in the end, Chris was not sold on the brass hardware for the cabinets or shelving. I was devastated at first (I take design way too seriously), but in the end, went with the stainless he wanted. At first it was a sacrifice for sure, but 95% of the time, he gives me what I want in design because it’s “my thing.” I figured he needed some say somewhere. After seeing the kitchen shelves accessorized, I realized he was right. I’ve said often that I was looking for contrast in how I designed this new house. My favorite part so far about these shelves is the contrast. I love the brass accents I’ve thrown in mixed with the stainless modern lines of the brackets. In fact, the majority of what I’ve put on these shelves is “old” or rustic. The vintage green and blue glassess… The old landscape paintings found at thrift stores… The antlers… I’ve dreamed of open shelving for years and am really loving already. I keep walking in the kitchen and just staring at them. Isn’t it crazy how having something you love in your home totally affects your mood? Pretty makes me happy 🙂 Tomorrow, I’ll have a few more updates from our in-progress kitchen.

Great job! Reply
