RenovationsOur Old Backyard Shed June 1, 2016The project I’m sharing today is the one we’ve been most excited about since we started planning this renovation. When we moved into this house, there was this old, weathered shed in the backyard. Our initial plan was to tear it down. Once we added the back addition, it was only a few short steps from the new back door. I mean, what could we do with it anyway? And then inspiration struck. We’re partnering with Lowe’s Home Improvement on this shed transformation and I couldn’t be more excited. We’ve always dreamed of having a screened porch, but building one from the ground up is a big investment. Using this existing structure to create one is saving us major money and time. Here’s how we’re tackling it: We’ll be cutting out large “windows” in each side to make it feel like the walls are totally screened. We’ll do windows instead of totally removing the walls to maintain enough of the existing structure to keep it supported and sound. Each long side will have two 6ft. wide by 7 ft. tall windows, so it will feel really open. The back will have a long transom to let in light. The entrance will be re-done with a barn light and new doors. The interior is my favorite part. The inside already had planks on the walls and ceiling, making it really easy for us to get an awesome finish with just cheap white paint. The planks and vaulted ceiling are my favorite part. As with most of my projects, the inside will get a fun, layered finish with some definite boho inspiration. This will be a big transformation and I can’t wait to finish it up and reveal it to you guys! We’re working fast on this one to get it done in time for summer and I’ll be sharing progress on Friday! Stay tuned, friends.

Marge Sakelik says June 1, 2016 at 11:10 am Hopefully you will put a new roof on too……I can see light coming thru and thru dome of yhe walls. Reply
Lindsay says June 3, 2016 at 7:22 am Marge, we actually already put a new roof on when we did the new roof on our house. What you’re seeing on the ceiling isn’t light. It’s the “paper” they lay underneath the shingles. That roof is good to go 🙂 The planks inside do have some gaps, which is normal for old construction like this and I love the character of it. We’re making sure there are no big gaps on the walls as we finish it. Reply

Carol @ CAD INTERIORS says June 1, 2016 at 11:11 pm I’m excited to follow this transformation. What a great idea! But I’m curious… Do you have or will you have electrical in there? We have a similar “shed” that we have yet to convert/renovate, but we were told that the existing electrical has to be concealed behind drywall (the walls are like yours now) to pass code. Reply
Lindsay says June 3, 2016 at 7:18 am Carol, oh no we are! That’s definitely not my area of expertise, but my husband is an electrician, so he’s making it all work 🙂 Reply
Val says June 3, 2016 at 3:18 pm I’m very excited for this too! I know its going to have such a cool vibe like the rest of your designs. Are you having to replace the wood siding? Reply
Lindsay says June 5, 2016 at 3:36 pm Hi Val! I hope it does! I realized I didn’t even address that in my post! We aren’t. None of it is rotted and is in really good condition (structurally). The paint is just peeling. At first, we were going to paint it to match the house, but have decided to leave it for now. We’re both really drawn to chippy, rustic barns and really wanted to channel that feel out here instead of making it feel perfect and new. It’s more rustic than some might want, but we’re so excited about it! And it saves so much time and energy scraping and re-painting. We can always paint down the road if we decide to, but it’s nearly impossible to achieve a chippy look 🙂 Reply
