Renovations, The Buffalo BurrowOlive & Moody Master Bath Reveal October 26, 2020 This is a sponsored post by Lowe’s Home Improvement. All opinions are 100% my own. Hello, friends! I am thrilled to share our Master Bath reveal that we did in partnership with Lowe’s! You may remember that this space started as the most challenging room in our new home. But I’m so happy to say it has turned into one of my favorite spaces! This room is the perfect example of something I’ve found to be true after all the homes we’ve designed: All rooms can work if you turn the challenge into a strength. I’ll talk more about that in just a moment, but first, here are all previous posts on this space in case you’ve missed them: DESIGN CHALLENGES IN THE MASTER BATH MASTER BATH DESIGN PLAN MASTER BATH TILE PAIRINGS BEADBOARD IN THE MASTER BATH OLIVE PAINT IN THE MASTER BATH Let’s take a look at how far we’ve come. Before we dive in, I have to give a shoutout to my super talented photographer friend, Emily Bolt. She took the gorgeous shots for this reveal. From this angle, you get a great view of the initial challenges in this space that have turned out to be my favorite feature: ALL THOSE DOORS! After designing several master suites, we realized that we both prefer his and hers closets. For Chris, it’s one of his few non-negotiables. And we also prefer closets in the bathroom vs. bedroom. When we first designed this floor plan, it left us with a square for the master bath and closets and there just wasn’t a great way to meet our function goals without having several doors and this hallway. We also wanted the window in the bathroom vs. closet. At first, I was frustrated because I felt like you were only going to see doors in the room! But I quickly decided to shift my perspective. I took that design challenge and tried to build the room around it. How could I turn that into a strength? The first thing I did was embrace the hallway. Now, I absolutely love that this is your view from the door. I played up the hallway vibe by hanging two matching lanterns down the center instead of one. I love how that plus the long runner that spans the space draws your eye down to the window and bench at the end. I know I talked about this in the previous posts, but it’s worth mentioning again here. I wanted character and I wanted moody in this space. I also wanted to play up the doors and tie them in to the rest of the room. I already knew we were going with olive doors throughout the house. As someone who paints most rooms white, I love having a door that contrasts. Four olive doors in this room would’ve really stood out…not in a great way I think. The first step was choosing doors that had character. I love these Mission style doors. So, I decided to meet all my design goals with one key element: painting the trim and beadboard the door color. It gave me the moody look I wanted and it makes the doors feel purposeful now instead of them taking away from the rest of the room. And gosh, I am in love with that yummy, perfectly moody green throughout this space. It’s HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams Conduit Grey and to me, it made our space. To lighten the space, I went with a lighter color on top: HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams Bohemian Lace. There are so many details in this room I love, but I’m pretty obsessed with the marble shower. We went with marble subway for the walls and marble octagon for the shower floor. I love how it looks against all the olive. And I especially love how it plays against the statement-making black and white tile floor. I knew I wanted a patterned floor in this space and I also wanted to go black and white against the olive. This floor is perfect. It feels like a classic pattern, so it fits in with the overall design goal for the house, but it still packs such a punch. As much as I love the hallway in here, the focal point of the vanity wall makes me so happy. There are so many details in this area to break down. I absolutely love the peg rail that runs on each side of the vanity. Not only does it create visual interest, it adds so much function for us. I now want to install peg rails in every area of our home (we used these pegs.) I also love the little picture ledge. Pegs and picture shelves forever! Let’s talk about this vanity. First off, I knew that I wanted some sort of custom cabinetry in here. I wanted the vanity to sit wall to wall and I also wanted to maximize storage. We’ve bought vintage pieces of furniture before and converted them into vanities. And it does add a lot of character! But that can be hard for the master because there’s never as much storage and it’s much more difficult to find a custom dimension. We ended up going with the Diamond Intrigue Cabinet Line that we used in our kitchen and we couldn’t be happier with it! We got to choose a custom size, maximize and design the storage we wanted, and have nearly unlimited choices on the finish. I’ll talk more about how this vanity functions for us in the next post. For now, let’s talk about the finish. I knew I wanted some wood in the space. For me, a space isn’t complete without some natural element to anchor it. I usually go for a darker wood as an accent, but knew I wanted very light since the bulk of this room is so dark. We went with an unstained wood that just has a clear finish on it for durability. I absolutely love how it adds a natural element in here, but also lightens. We went with this marble top that came with the two sinks already in it. I love how it ties in with the marble in the shower and again, lightens. We went with Delta oil-rubbed bronze faucets to tie in with the other black elements in the space. And how cute are those ball feet on the vanity? I love that we were able to customize every part of this vanity while still getting the feel of a nice piece of furniture instead of the more traditional built-in unit. For the mirrors, I considered a lot of different options. But in the end, I didn’t want to introduce any other finishes or colors. I decided to go with my love for shaker style and frame in mirrors with very simple wood trim. I love how they still stand out against the cream walls, but they blend in well with the space. For vanity lights, I wanted something special. But again, I didn’t want to bring in another design element. I liked the idea of going dark on the bottom with the olive paint and the black tile, but then going all light on top so the space didn’t feel too heavy. These cream sconces helped achieve that and are so special. The inside is brass, so they have a bit of a glow when turned on. I love how they add just enough to the room without dominating the view. Overall, I can’t get over how much I love this space. I never thought I’d say that when we started designing it! I remember, I actually thought, “Oh well, the rest of the house will be pretty,” like there was just no hope here. But I pushed through and am very grateful I did. Getting ready in here everyday is a dream. It feels like a special oasis for us, which is exactly what a master suite should be! This space stretched me creatively and I learned so much from designing it. And it has been so fun to share it with y’all as it’s unfolded!
