Home Decor, KidsUpdated Plans for Dax’s Nursery September 6, 2017 Thank y’all for your sweet comments about the meaning behind Dax’s name! It’s a powerful story to us and I was so excited to share even if it was over four months after we gave him that name. And speaking of this little one, it’s about time we give him a nursery, don’t you think? As many of you guessed in the last house, it wasn’t worth setting up a nursery knowing we’d be moving quickly and he’d be in our room anyway. I didn’t want to design anything for a room we’d be leaving so soon, knowing the art, rugs, etc. may not work in a new room with a new size and layout. And good thing I didn’t because who would’ve guessed his new room would be a closed-in porch that was 7 ft. x 11? Not me, for sure! But the awesome thing once we started mapping it out was that it was absolutely perfect for little man’s nursery. We measured the furniture that had to be in there and it fit perfectly in the space. Here’s the layout we’ll be using for his room: All of the pieces we already had and had already planned to use fit perfectly in the space! Once I knew we could make this space work size and layout-wise, I threw myself into designing a sweet little spot for our boy! While a smaller room like this does have limitations, it also lets you make a big impact with less. So I decided to see the size as a benefit instead of a challenge! I wanted to go with layered pattern and texture in here. While I love that everywhere, I really wanted to make this room shine! While I didn’t fully design a nursery before he came knowing we were moving, I did brainstorm what I’d want. You can read that full post here, but as a reminder, this was the vibe I was going for: Buffalo Check Curtains | 2. Deer Skin Printed Crib Sheet | 3. Gray Velvet Glider (from Rosie’s current room) | 4. Campfires art | 5. Stuffed Bear | 6. Red Persian Rug | 7. Rustic Buffalo Photograph | 8. Pacific Northwest Poster | 9. Camping Plaque As I started actually planning his room with this new space in mind, I shifted some of the things I was thinking about, but the overall feel is the same. With his name meaning in mind, I wanted to take the outdoorsy vibe I was feeling and add oceans to it. I immediately started thinking about where Chris and I went on our honeymoon…Northern California. It felt like the perfect direction and theme for his space….redwood forests and rocky cliffs along the sea. With that new direction in mind, here’s what I came up with for his new nursery design: Turn on your JavaScript to view content 1. Moose Head – I knew I wanted some woodland creatures in here and I also wanted some whimsy and fun. The minute I saw this moose head, I knew it had to be in his room! It was the exact feel I was going for in this little boy’s space. 2. Ocean art – I knew there had to be some ocean art in this space to reflect the special meaning behind his name. I’ll be doing a little gallery wall with some of my favorite seascapes I’ve collected over the years and I’ll be working in some photos we actually took on our honeymoon of the Northern California coast! 3. Deer Skin Crib Sheet – I wanted there to be some major rustic nods in this space and I loved this deerskin printed crib sheet I found from Etsy! 4. Mountain Range Wall Hook – I love the modern vibe this brings in and it’ll be the perfect place to hang a coat and hooded towel. 5. Fun Stuffed Bear – I love the whimsical take on this rustic, boyish touch. 6. Buffalo Quilt – This is the first item I found for his room and it actually inspired a lot of the overall room design! 7. Wallpaper Design – I really wanted to do some sort of painted wallpaper above the board and batten in here, but I wanted something simple and not too busy. I came across these decals and loved the mountain and tree design! I decided to paint my own since they’re simple and I want to easily be able to paint over it in the future. Plus I want to customize the design a bit, but this will definitely be the inspiration for it! I’ll be doing a navy to tie in with the curtains. 8. Buffalo Check Curtains – I’m using this navy and white buffalo check to make some fun patterned curtains for his room! I wanted a bright navy that had a good bit of color to it, but wasn’t royal and this fabric was perfect! 9. Smiling Tree Pillow – I love Land of Nod so much for kids items. It’s always where I search first for fun and unique things for them. This smiling tree pillow has to be one of my favorites! I love the fun, childish feel of it, but I also love that it’s a tree…perfect for my theme. Sadly, this pillow is out of stock now, but you can find their other fun pillows here. 10. Vintage Red Runner – I already had this red runner from our last entry and the dimensions of his room definitely called for a runner. I was so excited to use it in here because it was one of my favorite rug finds and we don’t have another spot for a runner in this tiny house. It’s an eBay find! I love that it has a lot of blues, greens, and other colors in it to tie the space together. I also like the elevated, sophisticated feel of this and how it really balances the fun, whimsical items. 11. Map of San Francisco – This is a special one, y’all. I found this vintage map of San Francisco for Chris for our first Christmas to commemorate our special honeymoon trip there. He later made this frame for it and it just feels perfect to have it in Dax’s room for many reasons. The walls in this room are Benjamin Moore’s Avon Green. I love how they have color, but feel neutral and I LOVE the rug against them. I’m working to finish the kids’ rooms in the next month, so they each have special little spaces to enjoy that aren’t filled with boxes. I’m so excited with where they’re each headed! (If you missed Rosie’s Big Girl room post, check it out here). *** That’s been The White Buffalo motto for the last three years and is still what I’m striving to do each day in our home and with our family. Yes, that often means tablescapes, inspiring interiors, and fun before and after renos. But it also means family. Faith. Joy. Struggles. Laughter. Health. You’ll find a little bit of all of that here as I share how we’re choosing to live with both style and purpose. A huge part of that is our journey toward a more natural life that’s focused on enjoying each and every moment together. A huge thanks to my main blog sponsor that makes this dream of mine possible:

If you’re on the lookout for great ocean & water prints, check out brynnwcasey.com 🙂 She’s a local painter from my area and I’m just obsessed with how she captures water on a canvas. Reply

Sharon says September 7, 2017 at 1:05 pm I loved the story on Dax’s name. It is so humbling to have the God of the universe not only provide us with the direction we need, but also confirm it multiple times. WOW. His nursery plan is adorable- so cozy and warm and yet all boy. What an awesome space he is going to have to call his own! Reply
Rachel Winchester says September 8, 2017 at 3:53 pm It’s coming together nicely, and I like the small change in direction. Benji’s first nursery was a small room – not quite as small as Dax’s – but I actually ended up liking the way it packed a punch and how it felt full without being overwhelming. Looking forward to seeing the space continue to come together and how you do the design on the wall!!! So fun! Reply
Mosie says September 16, 2017 at 5:13 pm Are you familiar with the Best Made Company? They are an outfit that sells high end camp items, and they make some very cool enamel signs…..two that come to mind are “What Good Shall I Do This Day” (which is hanging over my stove) and “Be Optimistic”. I think you’ll love them; check them out. Cheers. Reply
