UncategorizedStars…They’re Just Like Us August 21, 2013I’ve always laughed at this saying because in my head it is so not true. Picture me, picking up a People Magazine and seeing Kate Hudson getting a cup of coffee. The caption reads, “Kate drinks coffee in the morning…Stars, they’re just like us.” This idea always makes me laugh out loud. That is such a loaded statement and just because she drinks coffee doesn’t mean movie star Kate and myself live the same life. Though, I do love her. Anyway, I do have a point here… I kind of felt this same way about the stars of the Design and blogging world. I could go on and on naming them because there are so many amazing ladies that I’ve read for years and love. When I was headed to Haven, I was a bit nervous about meeting some of these stars. To name a few, I was “worried” about meeting the likes of Mandi from Vintage Revivals, Emily from Emily A. Clark, Ana from Knock-Off Wood, Kristin from The Hunted Interior, Ashley from The Handmade Home…okay I said a few, but I could go on! I was in the car on the way to the conference with my parents. We were coming from The World’s Longest Yardsale and only had one car, so they were kind enough to drop me off. I was a bit nervous about the coming conference and meeting some of the ladies above. My dad said, “They’re exactly like you. They started out exactly like you. They’re just people.” I was having a hard time believing that and then I met Mandi and thought, huh, he was right. Then, I heard Ana White speak at the opening session and she told her blog story. Believe it or not, that DIY giant started out just like the rest of us. And she was as nice and normal as could be. All the ladies I mentioned above I met and had the exact same reaction. I left Haven stunned and encouraged by how amazing this blog world is that I somehow find myself a part of. It’s filled with amazing, talented, and kind women who really are just like me. They started just where I did. I was reminded of this last night when my Better Homes and Gardens came. Do y’all read Oh Joy? She’s a queen in the design blogging world and I adore her blog and all of the pictures she posts of her little Ruby. Well, her home was featured in this Stylemakers issue. I love her fun home. And her cute little girl’s room. I’ve loved her home ever since I first saw it on her blog, but that wasn’t the part of her magazine spread that really caught my eye. It talked about how she and her husband were incredibly broke at the beginning of their marriage. They both had dreams and were trying to pursue them. Then, once they worked hard and got where they’d wanted to be, her husband bought her those bust statues from the picture above to celebrate the realization of their dreams. It’s such a good reminder that this amazing blogger with such amazing style and success started exactly where I am. Yes, she’s a design star, but she’s also just a girl. A girl who had a big dream to design, chased after it, and got her wish. That is so encouraging and inspiring to me as we each try to find our way. Yep, stars really are just like us.

Jesse @ Scout & Nimble says August 21, 2013 at 10:49 am What a great post, Lindsay. It is so true…I think when we start out at anything, we look at the experts & think that they are better than us and put them up on a pedestal. While they are all super awesome, they are just like us and were standing where we are currently at one point in time. I love that when we meet them, they are normal, humble, encouraging and helpful. And that’s when I usually truly understand that all those qualities are how they got where they are today and if one just keeps plugging along…they will succeed too! π Reply
Lindsay says August 21, 2013 at 9:28 pm Thanks, Jesse π It really is so true…now the trick is just taking that to heart and always remembering it when we start to doubt. That’s where I struggle for sure.. Reply

Lindsay says August 21, 2013 at 9:27 pm Thanks, Bethany π It’s as much for me to go back and re-read as anything. Why is it so easy to lose heart? One day I’ll be great and then the next, I’ll be doubting myself. Ugh… Reply

Whitney Shortt says November 1, 2015 at 8:00 pm So, I know this post is over two years old, but I needed to hear this. There are some amazing bloggers in my area who I’ve been wanting to reach out to and meet, but they’re stars in my mind, and I’ve been intimidated. I’ve been reading through your blog to learn more of your story and how you grew your blog, and it’s been super encouraging. I’d love to meet you some day! Reply
