UncategorizedLake House Inspiration July 15, 2014Well, I’m back from Haven, rested up, and back to work. I’m sitting here at my desk with a to-do list a mile long. Gorgeous sunshine is streaming in through the window and I can’t help but wish I was out at the lake enjoying it! So, since I can’t be there today, I decided a little Lake Inspiration was in order. If I can’t physically be there, going there in spirit is the next best thing! Here is exactly how I would decorate my dream lake house living room. Sources (from top to bottom): Set of 4 Paint-by-Numbers | Mounted Moose Antlers | White Pottery Barn Couch | Gray Mid-century Armchair | Leather Butterfly Chair | Teal Overdyed Kilim Rug | Industrial File Cabinet Coffee Table | Lumbar Kilim Pillow on Couch | Square Kilim on Couch | Lumbar Kilim in Armchair | Square Kilim in Butterfly Chair | Red Kilim Floor Pillow | Multi Kilim Floor Pillow In my opinion, our lake house is the best kind of lake house. It’s an old cabin built with love nestled right on the banks of Lake Keowee here in South Carolina. I had our little cabin with pine wood walls in mind as I designed this. I was thinking Vintage Rustic Lake Lodge with a little Modern Twist. I always design my rooms in layers. I start with a base layer that’s filled with the main items. Then, I layer on the pretties. My base layer for this Lake Living Room began with the teal overdyed kilim rug. My favorite part of designing beach or lake rooms is to bring in the water. The water at our lake is this lovely blue/green color, exactly like this rug. I really love overdyed kilims and how they still have the pattern I crave, but are more subtle with the monochromatic color scheme. Next, I added the classic, white couch from Pottery Barn. I love the modern, square lines. It gives it a fresh feel and this white would look great against some wood walls! For the side chairs, I wanted to bring in a little modern touch. Now, I love rustic and I like my cabins to be rustic. But, rooms appeal to me most when they have a little contrast worked in. This is a mostly rustic and vintage room, so the modern side chairs give it a collected feel. Mostly modern rooms look great with an old, industrial coffee table or end table. I love the leather Butterfly Chair and those are surprisingly comfortable for lounging! The mid-century armchair with gray leather seat picks up the tones of the Butterfly Chair, while not matching exactly. I really pictured this room with an old, industrial coffee table. I found this reclaimed wood and metal file cabinet table on Etsy and I love the history it brings in. Once I have my base of big items, it’s time to layer on the pretties and accessories. I usually choose either my base or my accessories to be fairly neutral. I tend toward having a mainly neutral base layer with style, personality, and color layered on afterwards. I definitely stuck to that formula for this Lake Living Room. I promise, not every room I design will have layered kilim in different prints, but many might. I love the style, texture, and contrast that it provides. With my eclectic tastes, I don’t go with matchy-matchy, however I do want my colors to coordinate. I relied on my absolute favorite source for kilim pillows: the shop Kilimdeholic. They have the most amazing variety with over 1500 kilim pillows, all one-of-a-kind and their prices are unreal! I mean the most expensive pillow in my mood board above was $45 and that was for the large floor pillow! My goal with design is always to bring in function, so I really thought about how we use our living room at the lake. I could so see little ones lounging all over the floor, so I brought in some larger, kilim floor pillows for that. I really wanted to have fun with art and wall decor. I knew some large antlers had to be in this room. I love antlers, but in a lake cabin, they’re a necessity! I love the shape of moose antlers and one day, I’m going to find me a mounted set that isn’t incredibly expensive. One can hope! Since I’m picturing all of this with wood walls and the furniture is pretty neutral, I knew I needed to bring in some color. The kilim pillows go a long way for that, but I thought some vintage paint-by-numbers would look lovely with their fun feel and colorful palette. I’m loving this set of four lake paint-by-numbers from Etsy: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. I hope you enjoyed my Lake Living Mood Board. You can see my other mood boards here.
