StyleBSHT Favorite Room – Our Master Bedroom August 25, 2014 Hosting Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours has been one of my favorite things since The White Buffalo started almost one year ago! I started this series, which happens several times a year with different editions, because I love seeing creative bloggers’ home tours. It is so inspiring to me and how fun to share tons in one short week?! I am so excited to kick off a Favorite Room Edition today where 32 amazing bloggers will be sharing their favorite rooms with you all week. I’m the first stop on our little tour and I really debated which room to share. Not that I don’t have unfinished elements in every room, but I do have several rooms that I LOVE spending time in. I considered sharing my kitchen or my office, but ultimately decided that our master bedroom is my current favorite, if I had to choose. And I made up this tour asking for other bloggers to share their favorite rooms, so I guess I kind of backed myself into a corner there. There are several reasons why I would deem this room my very favorite. I had it in my head for quite some time, so seeing it come together was so exciting. My goal when I initially started designing this room was to create a space that mixed my style with my husband’s. A Masculine meets Feminine Master, if you will. You can read about my steps to blending those two styles here. I knew we would start with all-white, board-and-batten walls. Then, we would layer on the personality! My husband loves rustic elements, and actually, I do too. So I knew that bringing in a big rustic pop would suit both of us. I dreamed up our DIY Wood Round Headboard almost a year before we actually made it. I was worried it would look too woodsy for even me, but I’m so in love with how it turned out. For the bedding, I knew that color and texture were my priorities. We got the white Pottery Barn bedding for our wedding and I still love it. I thought it would provide a great base. I love all things bohemian, so I saw this as an opportunity to really bring in some feminine pieces I loved, while not overdoing it for the hubby. I started with the quilt as my inspiration for the entire room, actually. I loved the blue and green floral motif. Vintage floral fabrics is another love of mine. But this quilt is extra special. It was made by my great-great-grandmother and it’s been in my grandma’s house for years. She was so sweet to let me use it in our bedroom. I smile every time I make the bed. For the accent pillows, I dreamed of some kilim shams. Well, those were hard to find and when I did find them, expensive. So, I DIY’ed them! I used my tried and true method of turning kilim-style rugs into pillows. The shams are made from $20 Garden Ridge rugs and the lumbar is made from a $3 Garden Ridge rag rug. I loved the kilim-style pattern on the shams and then the extra pops of bohemian color on the lumbar. I’ve done this several times now and always get such compliments on the pillows! In fact, the majority of questions I’ve gotten about this bedroom is, “Where can I get the pillows?!” Follow this tutorial to create your own and see some other examples of my kilim rugs turned pillow successes! My other favorite part of this room are the light fixtures. These are one of my favorite projects that we’ve ever done. We took fruit bowls from Target to make the lampshade and then created the industrial pipe fixture as a base. I love the copper mixed with the white, the unique wire shape mixed with industrial, and the best part? They were super cheap and easy to make. You can follow our tutorial here to make your own. The nightstands were a bit of a struggle. I love mis-matched nightstands in a bedroom. I think that really gives a room a collected look and it allows for you to bring in some of the individual’s personality in their nightstands. I was fine with them being different, but I wanted them to be similar in scale. Ultimately, that just wasn’t possible. I desperately needed the drawer space and had 4′ of clearance on my side! I made over my childhood bedroom chest with some bright emerald paint from Home Depot and some cheap gold and white knobs. Chris, on the other hand, had about a foot to allow for the closet door to open. There was no way with the difference in sizes to make them similar, so I decided to just embrace the difference! This is actually an old Garden Ridge plant stand. I asked Chris what he needed in a nightstand. His response was, “A small surface to sit things on.” How demanding, that hubby of mine. So, this fit the bill. I wasn’t loving the open base against the white wall and didn’t see a great way to make that very useful storage, so I thought a stack of some of my favorite vintage books would be lovely. I love the little pops of color and worn textures they bring into the room. Bedrooms are all about comfort and the most comfortable (but still stylish) thing in the room is our rug. Every bedroom needs one. Just take my advice. You can read my full reasons here. But seriously, this rug is awesome. I love the comfy appeal of shag, but don’t always love the look. This Moroccan Shag Rug is killer. It’s comfortable, but has serious style and I love the long braided tassels. Overall, I love the elements that make up this room. I love the mix of patterns and materials, the eclectic style, and all of the projects we worked hard on to make it our own. But I think, more than anything, the details and finishing touches can really make a room. That makes it cozy and brings it to life. One of my favorite little touches in this room is the vintage trunk at the end of the bed with its’ cozy styling. We are big tea drinkers, so the copper kettle and small tea station makes this room really feel like a retreat. Well, there is a little tour of our master bedroom, my current favorite room in our home! My good friend, Karianne, from Thistlewood Farms is next up on the tour! Kassie Pounds says August 29, 2014 at 4:13 pm Such a pretty room! Love that headboard! I was just in Sun Valley, Idaho, and the Starbucks there has super tall ceilings – some sections of the walls are narrow, but go all the way to the roof with logs, looking similar to the way you did the log look. Very cool! Reply
