One of my favorite things about our house so far is the DIY Faux Fireplace we did in the living room. Every time it shows up on the blog or Instagram, I get so many questions about it. I really wanted a fireplace in our living room addition that was the focal point of the room and really made a statement. Fireplaces and mantels add so much character and I love having it to decorate throughout the year.
A traditional wood-burning fireplace would’ve been ideal, but was definitely out of the question and budget. But for a small fraction of the price, we decided to do a “faux” fireplace with ventless gas logs. In the room, it looks exactly like a real, normal fireplace, but it has no chimney and saved a ton of money. We’re talking thousands, y’all.
We started out with a bump out in the sheetrock centered between two beams.
We put in wiring for our two sconces above the mantel. We got the fire insert from Home Depot and had the gas line put in place. The next step was to tile the surround. I knew what color I was picturing for the fireplace and knew that marble would be perfect with it. And I like how that kind of elevates the fireplace design.
We went with these large marble subway tiles for the hearth and this 2″ marble hex for the surround.
Once this was done, we started all of our trim work to create the mantel. It was surprisingly easy to build. I keep telling Chris that it turned out like a “real mantel.” And he laughs and tells me it is. What did I think real mantels were made out of? I just never really thought about being able to build one!

We painted it the same hunter green that I’ve used on the kitchen cabinets and the exterior siding: Benjamin Moore’s Hidden Falls. This apparently is my color of the year, friends. I love the dark green against the wood beans and white walls. It really is the focal point of this room, just as I’d pictured.
I think this might be my favorite thing Chris has built.

Y'all did such a great job on this project, and the color is just perfect! It really is such a great focal point, and I love how the color really flows through the kitchen & exterior, giving a sense of theme and consistency to y'all's house. Oh my word, I’m so excited to hear that you used Ventless gas logs! I’ve seen this floating around on Pinterest and IG, but never realized that it was ventless. I’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate something similar in our living room and I think I finally found it. Awesome job!
