StyleWhat’s Your Style: Kitchen Edition February 25, 2014 I was so excited to be a part of Jenna and Jamie’s series last month: What’s Your Style: Living Room Edition. This month, we’re all sharing our kitchens and how we brought our style to life in the space. If you’re hopping over from Jamie’s blog, So Much Better with Age, I’m so glad you’re here! I recently did my final (for now) kitchen reveal, so this is review for some, but I’m talking specifically about how I infused my complex style into the space. Hop on over there for some before photos, though. The transformation is still a little crazy to me. As a reminder, here’s my complicated style: Kitchens are a bit difficult to design, I think, because so much of it just feels permanent. You know? For the living room, I buy everything at thrift stores (except my beloved couch), so replacing it when I tire of it isn’t too big a deal. For the kitchen, replacing cabinets and counter tops? Yeah, not happening. So, I wanted to create a white, neutral box that still had style. But then layer my style on top of it. I adore the color white and our last house had a nice, but dark kitchen. So, I’ve been dreaming of a bright, white kitchen for so long. Here was my plan: White floor-to-ceiling bead board gave the walls a little country texture. The white IKEA farmhouse sink added some country charm. Open shelving was traditionally in country kitchens, but I gave ours a modern spin with these modern stainless IKEA brackets. For some more modern, we chose the stainless appliances, stainless hardware, and my favorite, the stainless hood. The rug is my main bohemian statement in this room. This rug is one of my favorite things I own. I scoured eBay in search of a colorful kilim runner for my new kitchen months before our first house even sold, months before this kitchen was even designed. But I knew I wanted a long kilim runner, and darn it, I was going to design a kitchen around it. I found this rug and we did just that. Oh, how I love her. The island is another favorite. I said eclectic above right? Well, with all of the white and the sleek granite counter tops, I wanted a rustic wood island. I was thinking all rustic wood, but then a tree in our yard needed to be cut down and we had some live edge lumber. Love the rustic touch it adds. Then, I realized that this big white box needed a pop and in came a smoky emerald base. Our kitchen makes me happy. It really does invite me in. I love living life in this kitchen. I’ve fallen in love with cooking and gluten/dairy free baking here. You can see more about our baking and coffee station here. This kitchen is one of the first rooms I’ve designed that completely lives out what I believe about design in a very tangible way. How you feel in your home matters and has purpose. For many, that has something to do with how your home looks. This pretty kitchen that feels so my style makes me want to hang out here. It makes me want to use it, make it work hard, and prepare meals for my family. But it also reminds me that I’m creative. It’s gotten me out of the recipe book and cooking out of obligation and into experimenting and having fun. That process has given me a freedom to love cooking and a freedom to fail at it, which has made me a much better chef, I might add. It’s not about making things pretty. It’s about creating a home that invites you in, encourages you to learn, and allows your family to breathe a sigh of relief because they’re home. My kitchen really is that place for me, which I never thought I’d say! For the complete post of our kitchen renovation, some before photos, and a list of sources, click here.
