Our Fireplace Sconces

 

The sconces just make our Fireplace redo, in my opinion.

You can see the before and after of our fireplace and how we re-did it for $50 here.  In designing the molding I wanted to add, I pictured some sconces similar to these in between the trim pieces.  I originally wanted to wire in actual working lights, but there is brick all the way behind this fireplace, so that wasn’t an option for us.

We considered trying to make some, but were in a bit of a time crunch for the Home Depot Holiday Challenge.  Chris had a great idea.  Maybe we could find some ready-made lanterns and use them.

I found these lanterns at Hobby Lobby.

I knew I wanted to brighten them up because this dark exterior wouldn’t pop against our black fireplace.  I was picturing gold sconces.  But I loved the shape and thought they could really be perfect!

First, we removed the handles using bolt cutters.

Then, we decided to go ahead and get them ready to hang before I finished them.  This way the finish I was adding didn’t get scratched in the process.

First, we drilled a hole in the wall where we wanted them to hang.

Then, we hammered in a plastic anchor to make it more stable since there was no stud here.

You can see all of this was done before our final coat of paint which I would really suggest so that you don’t mess up that pretty final coat.  Ofcourse, if you’re adding this to an already painted area, I think you’ll be fine!  Just be careful of scratching.

After we got the anchor in, we held up the lantern and measured where the hole needed to be.

Then we drilled a hole into the lantern using a metal bit.

 Once the hole was in place, we went ahead and screwed the lantern into the wall, just to make sure it was a fit.

It fit perfectly!

We removed the lantern and then it was time for it to get pretty.  I used my new favorite product: Rub n’ Buff in Gold Leaf.  How in the world have I never used it before?

I’ve read about so many people using it and just never tried it.  I rubbed it on with a paper towel.  It was super easy, took no time to dry, and gave me the exact beautiful finish I was hoping for!

And more than anything, I LOVE how they pop off of that black fireplace and really add something.

They sort of “bookend” the fireplace and tie in the gold from the fire screen.
