wallpaper – worth the hassle?

There is no doubt that the wallpaper trend is back in full-swing.  Pinterest is filled with gorgeous patterned walls and I have to say, I’m second-guessing my anti-wallpaper stance.

When I see wallpaper, I’ve always seen work.  Work to remove and have a pretty, clean, paintable wall underneath.  Since I lean toward clean, white backdrops, heavily patterned walls haven’t really been my cup of tea.

But some of these fresh and fun walls have me rethinking.

Surprisingly, this white-loving girl is falling in love with these moody dark patterns.

The mainly white master bath redo above is punctuated by this dark wallpapered nook.  You’ve GOT to click over and see the space.  Lovely.

And of course, some subtle light patterns are nice too.

Florals always win me over.

But even with all of these gorgeous statement walls, I have the lingering question in my mind, “Is it worth the hassle?”  If my husband is still reading this (he may have had a heart-attack at the title), I know he’s screaming, “NO!!!!!!!”

I think as soon as I had it on the wall, I’d be blown away by the statement it makes!

But here’s my issue…I change my mind.  Like a lot.  When it comes to style and pieces in a room, I fall head over heels and one year later (sometimes one month), I’m ready for a change.  It’s just the way I’m wired.  I’m always designing and then re-designing and re-designing.  I love it.

So while I’m really considering statement walls for some future projects, I’m just not sure I could commit knowing I would probably grow tired of it.

I’m so in love with these statement walls in Lay Baby Lay’s small closet makeover.

But here’s the amazing part.

That ISN’T wallpaper!  I know…shocker.  She painted the walls black and then had fun with a gold Sharpie and some light pink paint.

Now those are some statement walls I could get behind.  Yes, it would take a little time (she said three hours total), but when I wanted a change, you just paint over it easily.

Maybe I’ll have to try out some statement walls with the feel of wallpaper somewhere that my husband doesn’t have to look at a ton.  My closet?  The office?

I’m antsy to try it out!  And, I’m anxious to hear y’all’s opinions.  Any wallpaper lovers out there?  Is it worth the hassle?

Any classic wallpapers you’ve loved that have stood the test of time (and maybe my re-designing indecision)?

I never thought I would be into wallpaper but now I TOTALLY am. If you think you’ll want to tear it down sooner rather than later that’s definitely something to consider though. I don’t think it takes that much more time than painting, honestly. But it can be expensive and the removal is something to consider if you don’t think you’re in it for the long haul. I have a very bright pattern in my powder room, which I totally love, and a subtle grasscloth in my dining room. I have a wide black and white stripe to put up in my mudroom and a graphic one for my laundry room…so I think it safe to say I’m solidly on the wallpaper train 🙂

Jennifer, this is such great advice! I’m solidly on the train for the look, but still trying to decide on my constant need to change things up! I’m atleast going to try the temporary options out there and maybe a painted version!

Love this!! I myself am usually a go to paint kind of gal, but all the wallpapers I have been seeing are hard to resist!

I know, Maria! I’m usually one for neutral with pattern piled on in accessories, but am in love with these patterned wall options! What a statement!

I’m also in love with Joni’s closet makeover – such a great idea for those of us who don’t want to commit to wallpaper, but want that graphic punch!

Have you tried stencils? It may be a pain initially but another thing you can paint over easily. Etsy has some incredible ones that look just like wallpaper. 🙂

This is a great idea! I think I’m going to do a painted wallpaper version soon and I’ll definitely take a look!

PS – I love your name 🙂 Our new baby, Rosie, would agree!

If you think you want to replace wallpaper with different wallpaper, that’s an easy thing. You can leave paper backing on the wall and put the new paper over it. Easy.

The difficult part comes when you need to steam off all the glue and scraps of liner paper, scrub it down, and then scrub again to get the last wisps of glue off the wall. That is hard, hard work.

Even harder is the case where the wallpaper was put on a wall that wasn’t properly prepared, so you winde up gouging chunks of wallboard as you remove the paper. Then you’re faced with patching, sanding, and priming in order to get back to a neutral wall that’s ready to be painted or papered.

Good luck!!

Hi Ann! I really appreciate your insight 🙂 I think I’m leaning toward temporary wallpaper options or a painted version. I love the look, but I change my mind way too much to justify the real deal.

As striking as these new wallpaper patterns are, I wouldn’t do it. I speak from experience. I had the dining room papered when we built our home years ago. A number of years later, I had to remove it all when I tired of it. I tore up the walls, so it involved repairing the walls before I could paint. And since that time, I am on the third color in there! I also like to change things up, so I will never have it again. Your taste will change, and then you’ll say, “What was I thinking?”

I love wallpaper too but definitely not worth the work! I’ll take the sharpie over the paper any day! I’m working on a subtle statement wall now 🙂

I am sticking to my guns and staying with white walls. I’m so tired of painting and I don’t think that feeling will change for a long time. But I’m happy to swoon over pretty wallpapered spaces (and hope they fall out of trend soon so I can stop fighting with the desire to join in).

I love these looks. Been hesitant to try myself because I like to change things up often and I just love white walls! I did try a painted on version in my bathroom…people always say I like the wallpaper! Ha! Surprised when I say its paint! Love your blog and style have been following from the early stages! Just working on building mine up myself! 🙂

I am absolutely on board with the new wallpaper trend, however I am much more likely to buy the “easily removeable” wallpaper that are like giant decals… scares me much less. However, my husband would also scream “NO!!” He does not like the idea at all! I think i could convince him though 😉

When we moved into our house (3 years ago) it was head to toe wallpaper- I’m talking busy floral coupled with some trump l’oeil tassle borders. Seriously. Plus cut-outs pasted to every flat surface possible. I just can’t imagine putting paper back up after all the work to get the walls to their current state- white! However, these are so pretty and I love looking at other people’s beautiful statement walls! But man, taking it back down is a big job.

Lindsey,

Would you please be so kind and share where the second wallpaper (the dark with the pop of colorful animals) can be purchased? I am so in love with it and would like it to be my statement wall for our little ones nursery. It’s the first and only thing that has met my stylistic preference!
