Home DecorNew Persian Rug for the Master Bath April 12, 2016 When designing the master bath, I really hoped to use a rug we already had. We had these two extras that didn’t have a home yet in this house. I love each of them and posted this shot recently to get your votes. The red overwhelmingly won, which was my favorite for sure! I thought the rest of the room would come together quickly after picking the rug, but the more I tried to figure out the rest of the colors, it just didn’t seem right. This room design turned out so much more neutral than I initially pictured (you can read about those changes here). While I’m loving the room, I have really struggled with the lack of color. I also initially pictured a long runner that went from vanity to vanity. I really wasn’t planning to get a new one, but as I was searching for a new rug for the master bedroom design I’m working on, I came across one that I knew would be perfect in here. I got it from the same seller as the bedroom rug. They really have the best rugs for such great prices. I got this one for $220, which I was really pleased with for the unique pattern and colors and size. This rug is 2’9″ wide, which is one inch smaller than the width I had to work with – perfect! It’s 10’3″ long, so it spans vanity to vanity just as I’d hoped. What I love most are the colors in this beauty. It has so many touches of bright colors in it, but they aren’t overpowering. The colors really brighten up this room more than the last two options did. Now when I look in the room, it feels just right. The mirrors and lights still have to be painted, but I don’t miss the color I’d planned because I have it subtly in the rug. A lot of people have suggested that I not paint the mirrors and leave them wood, but they aren’t wood. They’re painted a chippy burgundy color (you can read more about them here). I still haven’t decided exactly what color the lights and mirrors will be. My goal is to get the office/playroom done for Monday’s big reveal and then get on finishing this room. It’s oh so close! I have a lot of options for the mirror color that are found in the rug, so I’ll have to spend some time in there studying the rug and the room. I love the overall impact this large, statement rug has and finally, this room feels right. And I love it against the floors. We’re almost there, y’all! I think the view from the bedroom might be the best part. Baileywife @ IrishmanAcres says April 13, 2016 at 7:44 am Love the new rug! Here is my unsolicited (probably unwanted) advice on the mirrors, since the size and shape are perfect, could you use the mirror only, like take off the frame? Or if you want a chunky frame, maybe build a wood one for it and stain it to match your vanities? Those are my two scents worth…. But anything you do will be perfect for YOUR home! ~Kim Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 11:39 am Thanks Kim! I really want the mirrors to contrast against the vanities. I’m such a weirdo and can’t stand for stuff to match. I don’t know what color yet…maybe even distressed white, but I do want a little contrast š Plus, just painting the existing frame is my easiest option right now and I’m drowning in room projects, hahaha!! I’m having a blast though š thanks for the great ideas, though, girl! Reply
Anita says April 13, 2016 at 8:34 am Oooo, love that rug!! I have bought several rugs from them and loved them all. I especially like the longer length runners and actually bought one to use as a table runner. Love how it looks on the floor too!! Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 11:38 am Yes, the longer length is so much better in here! I LOVE the idea of using it as a table runner!!!!! I may have to get a smaller one and totally do that š Reply
Austin says April 13, 2016 at 10:10 am Gaw-lee, do I love that rug! (Man, that sounded country, but I’m from GA, so it’s warranted). What a beautiful choice – I’m so glad you found the perfect one instead of settling for one that would just “do.” Can’t wait to see what you do with the mirrors and lights – I may be the only one, but I definitely think you should paint the mirrors! Ha ha. Love the shape, not a fan of the color. Not enough contrast between the mirror and the vanity (in pictures at least). Whatever you do, I know it’ll be gorgeous! Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 11:37 am Thanks so much, Austin! Yes, the mirrors have to be painted! Like I told Sherri, I would paint them even if they were wood because I can’t stand for things to be too matchy š Reply
Abby says April 13, 2016 at 10:14 am The rug is gorgeous! Nice find! However, I wanted to see if you could enlighten me about using vintage/wool/Persian rugs in the bathroom. For a while now, we have seen beautiful photos of Persian rugs used in bathrooms on Pinterest and blogs, and (while I want to follow suit so badly!) I’ve ALWAYS wondered–how do those not get ruined in a bathroom? I’ve always regularly thrown my bath mats/rugs in the wash, and I imagine you can’t do that with these pretty vintage rugs, so how do you ensure that the wool doesn’t stay wet too long/get mildew-y, etc.? Or do you just accept that it will be more high-maintenance and/or the rug will have to be replaced eventually after having wet tub and shower feet all over it and water splashing from the sink all time? Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 11:34 am Hi Abby! This is a great question that I actually have gotten before. I always use vintage Persian rugs in our bath and so far, have never had one ruined. Granted, I haven’t used one in a bath for 10 years or anything. We’ve never lived in a house longer than two years and I’m always switching my rugs around. We’ve never had an issue with them, though I’m sure if they were white, you’d see some wear. For me, I love the color and pattern so much and I want to live on them and really use them. I know they might have a shorter life span in a bath or kitchen, but I always find super deals on them, so I’m okay with it showing a little more wear after a few years. If I’d paid the high price tag some do on vintage rugs, I’m sure I would feel differently. Plus, they can be cleaned, so after a few years, I’ll do that. I’ve really never had an issue though! Reply
Marge Sakelik says April 13, 2016 at 10:43 am Oh, practical me as always, where’s the storage? Seems like extra wasted time each day, having to go get, hauling out toothpaste/glass, hair brushes, hand soap, towels, etc , from else where and then returning them…..all for the sake of design. Like choice of rug, but room design is not functional enough for daily living, in my humble opinion…..at least not for me. Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 11:31 am Marge, thanks for the comment! So this is in progress…we will DEFINITELY have hand soap, hand towels, toothbrushes, etc. out on a daily basis. We aren’t really using this bathroom yet, as we’re waiting on window coverings, etc. You’ll see all those functional things in the reveal soon! We only chose these vanities with no storage because we’re installing a huge 3’w x 8’t cabinet right behind my vanity. I’m the only one who pulls lots out to get ready like makeup etc., and I’ll be able to turn and get whatever I need without even taking a step! It’ll be as easy as pulling something out of a cabinet below. I talked about our storage situation for this bathroom that really played into our vanity choice here: http://thewhitebuffalostylingco.com/vanities-for-the-master-bath/ Thanks for the input, though! Sherri says April 13, 2016 at 11:04 am That rug is amazing and perfect for the space! I agree with Austin. The mirrors need to be painted! There are such awesome colors in the rug, so any of those colors will add so much. Have you taken a bath in there yet? I see that there is no shade, so that kind of poses a problem!! Am looking forward to the upcoming reveals! You are one busy girl!! Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 11:36 am Sherri, I couldn’t agree more! The mirrors have to be painted! Even if they were wood I’d paint them because I can’t stand for stuff to match, haha. I’m so weird about that. And no, I haven’t taken one yet. Still figuring out what to do on that pesky little window, but we did buy a temporary privacy shade that we just need to hang in the meantime. I’m dying to use this tub! Reply
Angie Burke says April 13, 2016 at 12:48 pm I love the new rug — the colors are fantastic close-up! What if you painted the mirrors a dark teal similar to the color you painted your sweet Rosie’s room? The rug has so many fun colors in it, I’m sure you will pick something perfect! I love it! Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 10:16 pm Angie, I actually thought about that! I do think think that would work well! Reply
Amy Lynn says April 13, 2016 at 1:10 pm That is a beautiful rug! I love red Persian style rugs, and I’m hoping to maybe be able to incorporate one somewhere in our new house š Love how the bathroom is coming along, can’t wait to see the rest! Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 10:15 pm Thanks so much, Amy Lynn! I hope you find a good one š Reply
Susan says April 13, 2016 at 5:39 pm Love the new rug. Runners work well in many bathrooms. Just got my shower tile replaced and want a beautiful Persian rug for in there. Just started looking. Will have to check out your source. Love the idea of the storage cabinet. Wish I had room for something like that. Reply
Lindsay says April 13, 2016 at 10:15 pm Thanks so much, Susan! Yes, runners are my fave! I love them in baths and kitchens š Reply
Barbara says April 14, 2016 at 8:05 pm I LOVE IT!!! Looking to put one in my kitchen but still on the search for the perfect find. Reply
Brinah White says May 12, 2016 at 6:31 pm just read somewhere recently about using a runner under a bed instead of two bedside rugs. My practical side hates the idea of using a full-size rug in a bedroom where most of it would be under the bed and thus unseen. The runner idea seems so much more practical. Reply
Shirley Nguyen says June 9, 2016 at 3:01 pm I love the rug in the bathroom. Iām so stuck in the idea of standard bathmats that I would have never thought of using a rug instead. But it looks so beautiful that I might consider a change in my master bathroom. Thanks for sharing š Reply
