UncategorizedOur New Front Door: Dark, Stained Wood with White July 1, 2014 Our new front door is probably my favorite part of this exterior renovation! Remember the before? And now our glorious, wood front door just makes it all better! The dark-stained wood against the white is even better than I thought it would be. I loved this color scheme on the inside of our house: dark wood beams with all white walls. And I liked the idea of being consistent with our exterior color palette as well. The door is stained the same color as the interior beams: Minwax Dark Walnut. I love this rich stain and will definitely use it again! We went with a 12-light door for a couple of reasons. Function: With us getting rid of that front window, that meant one less window in this front room. Our house needed more light! So, in adding back the same amount of light with the door, it wasn’t a concern to get rid of the window. Pretty: These doors are just pretty! I love all of the glass. To save money (we’re always on a budget here, remember?), we went to a local Builder Supply Store to look for the door. If you’ve read any of Our Renovation Story, you know we got a ton here! Remember our Craftsman interior doors and the huge deal we got on those? This door came unstained and was $200. That’s a pricey purchase for us, but it was much cheaper for the same door anywhere else we looked and we were really set on this design. Traditionally, the inside of the front door would be painted white (or the trim color). Since we used so much dark wood in the house and already have so much white, I really liked the idea of staining both sides of the door. I love the statement it adds and how it warms up that big wall of white! One of the best and worst parts of the new front door is that Gracie can see out into the world beyond. She spends so much of her day just standing here like this watching the world go by. It really is great that it entertains her so much. The worst part comes in when a dog walks by on a leash, which happens many times a day. Being able to see out then isn’t the best thing in the world. Thanks to this door, I think some of our neighbors think a large, black monster lives with us. She’s so behaved and the sweetest thing in the world. Then by walks a dog, and things change. I know all dogs get excited when they see other dogs, but a dog who can jump over my head and a door that allows passersby to see this, makes for an interesting combination.

Kate says July 1, 2014 at 8:23 am love it! I think it was a great idea to stain the interior side of the door too–it adds such character to the inside! I am having the SAME issue with my dog–we recently moved and the side door (which faces the sidewalk) is all paneled glass–gorgeous light, but a lot more barking than we’d like….we’re trying to see it as a learning opportunity for her to learn a new command: “hush!!!” Reply

Kathryn says October 28, 2014 at 9:08 am I am so happy I stumbled across this! We’re redoing the front of our house right now and we got an unstained wood door that’s similar to yours. I’ve been brainstorming paint colors, but realized that staining it might be the way to go. Thanks for the inspiration! Reply
Crystal says August 18, 2015 at 11:57 am Where did you get the door from? It would be a perfect fit for us. Our entryway is a cave with our current solid (no windows) door. Reply
Lindsay says August 20, 2015 at 8:29 am Home Depot! Just go to the desk and ask for a wood 12-light door and this is one of the only options. They have to order it for you, but we love it! Reply

Lindsay says September 3, 2015 at 3:10 pm Hi April! The siding is white vinyl, so it isn’t painted 🙂 Reply
