UncategorizedMusic Page Placemats May 4, 2011For Ashley’s Bachelorette Weekend, I made these music page placemats for her Italian Welcome Dinner: I started with a book page canvas tutorial from Emily at Jones Design Company. For the placemats, I used poster board and cut it to size. I decided how big I wanted the placemats to be and cut the poster board to that size. Then, following Emily’s tutorial for a canvas, I started putting on the music pages. I started with one full page in the center and worked my way out. I used modge podge to adhere the pages to the posterboard. I folded the excess on the edges around the back and glued it down. Since they’re placemats, I wanted them to be durable, so I put a coat of the clear, glossy modge podge over the whole thing once the music pages were glued down. This gave it a hard durable surface. I really do like how they turned out: LESSON LEARNED: After we ate on them a few times, the music pages began to peel up in places. So, for the weekend, they looked great and served their purpose, but for future use, I’ll have to do some damage control. I want to make some for myself using book pages (duh!). I think I’m going to buy a plastic placemat (I actually had trouble finding these for Ashley’s – that’s why I used the poster board), but I’m going to search and find just the right placemat that’s a little more durable than the poster board. I’m also going to find something even stronger to put on a top coat. I thought about polyurethane or a protective coat spray paint, but I’m kind of doubting that these would work… I’ll have to do some research.
