UncategorizedOur Mudroom – Before & After January 21, 2014I’ve always dreamed of having a mudroom. When we moved the kitchen to what was an old garage, we decided to add a door. The old garage is right near our driveway, so we thought that could be a great “back-entrance” for us. And I immediately knew. That little corner of the kitchen is screaming, “Please, make me a mudroom!” Here was this corner of the “pre-kitchen” before. Gorgeous, I know. And here’s an in-progress shot. The closet that is framed out there is our pantry and the area to the right of it is empty and ready for a mudroom. Here’s another in-progress shot that’s further along. There’s the finished pantry on the left. And see the door we added? Right inside the door on the left is where I dreamed of a pretty, but functional catch-all. I pictured a bench and shelf with hooks for this area. I made this bench for my Knocktober Fest project. When it came to the shelf, Handy Hubby had a great idea. When we tore down this 20-foot wall, since it was originally a garage, there was old wood siding on that wall. We thought it would be pretty cool to use it for another house project. Meet our old siding turned rustic new shelf. We just took two boards and cut them to the right length. Then, we laid one on top of the other, as you see here, and nailed them together. The hooks are basic oil-rubbed bronze ones from Home Depot. I love the peeling white paint, but make sure you polyurethane something like this with a peeling finish or it’ll continue to chip away. I love having this area to style. Yes, I know it’s for function, but my favorite part will always be making it pretty. Yes, that is a picture of a buffalo up there. I’ll have to post about it later, but it was a gift from my sweet and dear friend, Kristina. And yes, there are antlers and a horseshoe because why not? I love having a place to drop my things right inside the door, but I really love the view of this little corner. And here’s a view a little further out where you can see a bit more of how this is situated in the room. Here are some sources for you, just in case you’re interested.
