UncategorizedKitchen Updates and a Few Changes May 7, 2013Everything at the house is coming along and the kitchen is close to functioning! Yay! That doesn’t mean totally finished and full of “pretties,” but working. Then we can focus our attention on the finishing and decorating of it! As a reminder, here’s the phase of our kitchen. Before: Oh, the lovely storage room phase. You can see more befores here. In progress: I’m so ready for it to be finished, but seeing those pictures one after the other makes me feel like it’s progressed quickly! You can read about the kitchen progress here, here, here, and here. Now: The back ordered fridge came! It might be hooked up with an extension cord currently (the kitchen wiring will hopefully be finished this week), but it is so nice to have a working large kitchen. Gracie had learned to open the mini-fridge. That was not fun. We discovered this fun fact one night when she was trotting through the living room with a bag of pizza in her mouth. Since then, she’s opened it like 100 times looking for food. It was time for the real fridge for sure. Now we just have to pray she doesn’t learn how to open this one… Another update you might have noticed above is the faucet. I love the old feel of the faucet. {via} And it works! We have running water now. So, all of the big components are in. This week, the wiring should be finalized, which means all of the appliances will work. We can cook again. We’ve gone out to eat every single night for two months. I love to go out to eat, but it’s gotten old. After that, we’re moving on to the details: shelving, hardware, decorating, island, lighting, etc. I’m so excited just thinking about it. Those details are where the changes come in. I posted this kitchen inspiration board here. Several things have changed since then. The biggest one I’m going to talk about today is the hardware. I found this hardware at Hobby Lobby and loved it. I had seen something like it in Nine and Sixteen’s kitchen and I love the vintage feel of the brass and porcelain. I brought them home and put some on the cabinets and it just didn’t have the feel I wanted it to. I’m not sure what it is, but it isn’t right. I still love the knobs and will probably use them on a piece of furniture, but not in the kitchen. I started trying to decide what I wanted and realized that I wanted something a bit more sleek and modern. Remember, these cabinets were given to us by some friends from church. It hit me that I actually like the hardware that came on them! It was these stainless pulls from Home Depot. {via} But the color wasn’t right. I don’t mind stainless, but we already have a lot of that in this room and y’all know I’m liking contrast. It’s funny, I’ve had a lot of people say I should match and do stainless, but I hate for things to match! I’m so weird. I wanted to bring in brass to this kitchen. Stainless feels cold and so does the white. Brass warms things up! After I decided that, I read in HGTV magazine that Nate Berkus suggested to use brass pulls in a stainless kitchen for contrast and bringing in old and new. Exactly what I was hoping for! So, I decided to paint them brass. Right after that, Eileen from A Creative Day posted these pulls. I was sold! So, I will be spray painting the ones above with a great brass spray paint. I’m going to bring in brass in some other ways, but still figuring that part out. There are some other changes on the horizon, but I’ll have to wait just a little bit to share. Just a hint, the island has changed slightly and it’s so much more awesome! And I’ve scrapped that lighting option. I’ll do a post on that soon! We’re getting there!
