UncategorizedHome Depot Style Challenge Update – Color March 12, 2014 If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve already seen some extra sneak peeks, but I decided it was time to catch up all of you lovely blog readers and share a little more. If you want to see more about where our patio is starting, you can read that here. And remember the mood board? Oh I am so excited to bring in all of that color and personality! As I said in the mood board post, I’m not planning to just hose everything in hot pink. If you’ve been around here for very long, you know that I like color mixed with a ton of neutrals. So, I’m mainly planning to bring in this color in three ways: 1.) Pillows and Textiles 2.) DIY Planters 3.) Accessories That is always my thought process when designing a room. And I thought, if it works for a room, it should work outside! I usually start with a neutral wall. Always white because for some reason, I can’t bear to paint it anything else! I look at gorgeous, colorful walls and think, “Ooh, I’m so doing that on my next room redo.” Then, the time comes and I create a mental mood board in my head for that project. (Does anyone else do this or am I just weird?) And that mental mood board ALWAYS has a colorful rug, lots of texture, and a white wall. Maybe I’ll break out of that box one day, but for now, I’m stuck. Go look at my House Tour if you don’t believe me. White living room, white kitchen, white lounge, white dining room, white built-ins, white mudroom, oh and big shocker here…white master bath. Wow, that was a bit of a tangent, but it applies here. So anyway, we obviously have a pretty neutral box outside. White house, blah yard, neutral patio, wood. (this photo above was before we styled it the first time, but you can see the backdrop better). Now, it’s time to add in some color!!! 1.) Pillows and Textiles In the mood board, I included a lovely, colorful kilim pillow. I know y’all are just stunned, but there will be several of those in this project. Time for a little sneak peek: I got this pillow cover off of eBay. I am so in love with the texture it has and the bright, but earthy feel. I know what you’re thinking, though. This pillow isn’t outdoor!!! And you’re totally right. It isn’t. I will be using some textiles that are not outdoor fabric weight. Not a ton, but a few. And the biggest reason for that is that I love kilim and the impact it makes enough to justify carrying it inside or putting it in a waterproof chest or something. But fear not, my friends. I will be doing some DIY versions of this style that are outdoor weight! So hopefully, that will make up for my totally impractical use of indoor pillows outside. So, this pillow above will be paired with many other pillows that coordinate and create that eclectic style I love. You know I can’t have too many pillows. These will go a long way to bringing in some happy color, but I also mentioned textiles. You know I love setting a pretty table, so this wood picnic version Chris made will get all gussied up with a colorful tablesetting complete with some really fun textiles. There will be some DIY’s in here! 2.) DIY Planters I’m planning to use a lot, and I mean, a lot of potted plants in this project. {via} I love the greenery that they bring in and I love huge groups of them clustered together. They make such a statement! I initially decided to use tons of potted plants because I wanted the mobility they provide. I wanted to be able to move them around to different areas if I liked. And, it allows me to cluster plants all around the patio. I’m going for the feel of our indoor garden, but with more color in the pots. Tons of pots gives me a huge opportunity for DIY and bringing in color. While I love the traditional terracotta pot, and I will definitely be using some of them, I love painted pots in all patterns and colors. I have some really fun projects that I’ll be starting this weekend for that! 3.) Accessories And finally, I mentioned accessories. Accessories are always the best way to add in personality and color, I think . But they are always my last thing to pick out for a space, so I haven’t gotten too far on this yet. But I’m picturing possibly some bright lanterns, bright place settings for the table, etc. More on that to come! So, there’s another little sneak peek. Tomorrow I’ll be talking about our biggest DIY for this project and if you follow me on Instagram, you already know! And just so you guys know, the finished photos of this project will go up on the Home Depot blog sometime in April or May. So, I wish that I could show full in-progress shots and more details as it develops, but we have to save those for the big reveal. I’ll share what I can and know that there will be tons of details and tutorials after the big reveal! Be patient with me and hopefully these little sneak peeks can hold you over until then 🙂 *** And a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE thank you to all of you who have taken my little survey so far. I can’t tell you how much your responses have encouraged me. I will be sharing the full results and what that means for White Buffalo next Tuesday (that gives you a whole week to get your responses in) and I’ll also be announcing who won the giftcard. Remember, there’s a $25 World Market giftcard up for grabs as a thank you for taking the time. You just have to take the survey and leave a little comment on that post telling me you did. But I can go ahead and say that the overall response so far is confirming exactly what I was feeling as far as content and future offerings. My mind is racing with the possibilities and I can’t wait to share next week!
