Home DecorDIY Moroccan Wedding Blanket Ottoman August 23, 2016 One of the first things I envisioned for this space was a coffee table ottoman with a Moroccan Wedding Blanket finish. My original plan was to use my Moroccan Wedding Blanket tutorial to create an ottoman. I love the result of this tutorial, but it is fairly work intensive. I came across these Moroccan Wedding Blanket rugs at World Market on clearance and it hit me. A much easier way to create my desired ottoman! My original plan was to use upholstery foam like I have for other projects, but it can be pricey as well. On that same World Market run, I found their outdoor bench cushions on a huge clearance. I’d been planning a large ottoman and had recently decided to go a bit smaller to allow for more play space. So the size of this foam was perfect at 19″ w x 43″l. It was the perfect size with the rug to allow just enough rug to fold under each side. Here were our main materials: 1 Moroccan Wedding Blanket Rug 1 Foam Bench Cushion 1 Piece of Plywood – cut 1/4″ smaller on all sides than the cushion Mid-century Table Legs – we already had these, but here’s a similar option These materials were so much cheaper than my original plan! The materials to create my other tutorial aren’t that expensive on their own, but they do add up. But when you add in the foam I was planning to get, it would’ve been about three times as expensive. And this tutorial took about a third of the time! Here’s how we made it: STEP 1: CUT TIES FROM CORNERS OF BENCH CUSHION STEP 2: LAY THE RUG OUT UPSIDE DOWN ON A FLAT SURFACE STEP 3: LAY THE CUSHION AND PLYWOOD CENTERED ON THE RUG STEP 5: MAKE SURE THE PLYWOOD AND CUSHION ARE CENTERED AND STRAIGHT This rug has vertical stripes, so it’s crucial that it’s good and straight. I also wanted it straight width-wise since the pattern varies. This row of sequins seen above is the distinct center of the rug. We measured the center of the plywood and drew the lines you see above on each side. Then, we folded the sides of the rug up to ensure that the center row of sequins lined up with our marks on both sides. STEP 6: ATTACH TABLE LEGS Since you want the table legs to go on the corners, the rug will have to be attached around them. It’s a very thick rug, so you wouldn’t want to try to attach them through it. Attaching directly to the wood gives the most flat and sturdy surface. Measure each corner to make sure they’re in the same spot. STEP 7: ATTACH CENTER OF RUG Once you have the legs attached, it’s time to begin wrapping and attaching the rug. We used a hammer and upholstery tacks to attach it. It’s good to have an extra set of hands for this part so that one can keep the rug pulled tight and straight and the other can hammer in the tacks. We put upholstery tacks every six inches or so to ensure it was securely attached. Once the center is done, it’s time to tackle those ends around the legs. STEP 8: CUT THE RUG AROUND THE LEGS We cut some of the excess rug right around the legs, so that once we found it up, it fits tightly. STEP 9: FOLD THE ENDS LIKE A PRESENT AND ATTACH Once you have the rug cut to fit around the legs, you’re going to fold the excess on the corners in and then fold up the center just like you’re folding the end of a present. We used three upholster tacks closer together to support the sides. Take your time on this part to really make sure it’s folded well and you don’t have the rug bunched in places. Once you’ve done this on the other end, flip your ottoman over and enjoy! It took us about thirty minutes to complete and the total cost was $120: Rug – $80 Cushion – $25 Plywood – $15 We already had the legs, but here’s a similar option. I love how it completes our living room! And I love the versatility of it. If I ever want a change in here, the size makes it perfect to be an entry bench or a bench at the foot of a bed.
