UncategorizedDay 11: 31 Days of Finishing Rooms October 11, 2011Wow guys, thanks for so much awesome feedback yesterday! I’m starting to narrow down our photo choices. I was hoping to have an “After” shot of the shelf today with it hung and everything, but we’re not quite there yet. It’s built and primed, but still needs one coat of dry brushing to finish it up. But I promised you a “How-to,” so here we go. Just as a reminder, here’s Pottery Barn’s version: And here’s how ours looks now: It’s not nearly as pretty yet (especially our furniture work room in the background), but the bones are pretty close to the original! I was talking with Chris to come up with the How-to steps and I had the hardest time coming up with them. That’s because it is seriously THAT EASY to make. It took us about ten minutes and had very few steps. So, here’s what we did (of course, I was too excited and forgot to take good pictures along the ten minute process – sorry about that y’all). What You’ll Need: 2 1×4″ boards (whatever length you need for your space) 1 1×2″ board (same length as above) 1.) Screw the ledge into the back of the shelf (take the 2 1×4″ boards and screw one into the other. They should be perpendicular). Tip: Screw from the back so you don’t see any of the screws. {I’m talking about the bottom and the back piece from this picture…make sense?} 2.) The next step is to take the 1×3″ and screw it in opposite the back piece. We tried to glue this part so that we didn’t have to fill in screw holes on the front of the shelf. But, the glue didn’t hold very well. So, we had to screw it in and Chris used some wood plugs and wood filler to fill in the holes. This added a few extra steps for finishing it but it is much more durable. That really is it. Just screw the three pieces together and then finish it in a stain or paint you like! I think the pictures are pretty self-explanatory… That’s what I thought when looking at the Pottery Barn picture, but thought that it just couldn’t be that easy. But it really was! Make one for yourself! According to my Day 1 schedule, I was only covering the living room for one week, but there is just so much to post about it! I think I’ll stay in this room for a few more days… Thanks for stopping in!
