UncategorizedA Little Bit Country November 13, 2012If someone had called me country a couple of years ago, I might have cried. Whenever I heard “country,” in regards to home design I went running the other direction. I was thinking of the “old” country, you know what I mean? I love all of the old country elements when balanced with white and a little modern edge: ex. vintage florals. But the old country tradition just piled it all on with no balance. It was a little much for me. But this year, someone came into our home for the first time and said, “Wow, your style is like country chic.” I didn’t cry or vehemently defend my home like I might have years ago. I smiled and was genuinely grateful for the compliment because that’s exactly what I love. And here’s the best part, I’m proud of it! I grew up on a farm (that’s what we call it…lots of land, but only a few animals) in Pickens, South Carolina. Pickens is a nice, small little town and we lived a ways outside the city limits of this small little town. Are you hearing me? We lived in the country. {the view from my parents back porch} And I loved it. Now, I love going to my parents house with the rolling fields around them and the view of the mountains. The air just feels fresher there and life slows down a bit once you turn down their driveway. Now, I live in a bigger city and we’re looking to move to a downtown area that’s much more city than country, but I know my country will come with me. We’ll take our downtown/city older home and country it up…country chic, if you will. I dream of a sweet, white country kitchen something like this… {Cottage Living Magazine} or this… {source} I want to bring on the buffalo check and gingham. {source} {source} And some lovely old paintings…the more the better! {source} I want to bring in some sliding barn doors. {source} And maybe an old country screen door or two. {source} At night, I dream of someday living in a lovely white farmhouse like this… {source} And how much better that picture would be if we had one of these out back… {source} Okay, y’all get the picture. I’ve got some country in me. I used to spend so much effort hiding that side of me and now I’m plastering it all over my home and the blog. And I wouldn’t change a bit of it. But y’all haven’t seen the most country side of me yet…I can’t talk about country and not bring in my absolute favorite show of all time. Please tell me y’all have seen Duck Dynasty. This is the funniest show I’ve ever seen. I literally laugh until I cry every single week. And the best part is, they’re a wholesome family with strong values and of course a lot of country…a whole lot of country. If you haven’t seen the show, you can learn more about it here. If you have, you’ll understand when I say that I have to close up this country post today…I have to go find my tea cup. I’m out, Jack. {This last part is for my best Duck Dynasty buddy: my daddy. And yes I still say Daddy. I think that’s an old southern thing}
Megan says November 13, 2012 at 11:33 pm Praise the Lord! I LOVE Duck Dynasty. I do not pride myself in too many Pickens-things, but I will be the first to admit that I watch this show weekly! Si and Jase keep me laughing! I take a bit of comfort/relief knowing that you enjoy it too! Reply

Tia says November 14, 2012 at 9:36 am That is definitely a Southern thing…I was born in the North and my family has been happily transplanted for 25 years here, I still say “Daddy” and I’m 28! Also, after moving further in the “woods” and actually into Dacusville from Easley, I am finally embracing my “country” side as well! My daughter will end up at Dacusville schools in 5 years and eventually at Pickens High School before I know it, so I figure I’d better be ok with it now! 🙂 Reply
Lindsay says November 14, 2012 at 10:39 am Pickens High is a great place to be!!! There’s just something special about life in the country. I think you can have benefits of that wherever too…it’s a mindset! I really still feel that way even though we definitely don’t live in the country anymore. Reply
Shannon says November 14, 2012 at 10:23 am LOVE me some Duck Dynasty!! They are such a hilarious but wholesome family. I love how they end most of the episodes with them all sitting down together for dinner and asking the blessing. Also, love that red screen door in front of the pantry- maybe that would force me to keep it tidier. Reply
Lindsay says November 14, 2012 at 10:37 am I know I love how they end each show all at the dinner table with a blessing – so sweet. I’m really thinking about using some kind of statement door on our next pantry or closets. I’ve seen so many different options and I love it. They just add so much character! Thanks for stopping in Shannon 🙂 Reply
[…] For starters, I grew up on a farm in a rural, small town and a love of country and rustic is in me to the core. […] Reply
