StyleWhat’s Your Style Series – Living Room Edition January 28, 2014 If y’all are headed over here from Melissa’s blog, Shabby Love, I’m so glad you’re here! Y’all know I am all about finding your own personal style around here. So, when Jenna from Rain on a Tin Roof and Jamie from So Much Better with Age contacted me about this series, I was thrilled! For the next two days, 13 bloggers are posting about their style in their living rooms. In February, we’ll be sharing style in our kitchens. And in March, we’ll be sharing style in our bedrooms. I know I talk a lot, and I mean a lot, around here about my style. Yes, it’s a long complex name, but I deem my style as: I have long been on a style journey. I fell in love with styling at a very young age, but for so long, I just emulated what others did. I didn’t realize I was doing that until recently, but it’s true. I decorated our whole house and while we were there, I loved it. But as we were moving, I realized that I could go back through every room and tell you what blog I got this idea from, what Pinterest image that came from, etc. I don’t dislike our first house, but I’ve realized it wasn’t really me. When we bought this little cottage, I decided that I was going all out with my style. I initially panicked because I was already aware that my style is a bit weird out there. I immediately thought, the blog world won’t love it! And then it hit me…the blog world doesn’t live in my house. I do. My family does. Finally reaching that realization was huge for me to just go for it and style with what I love. Embracing what I love showed me that like my personality, my style isn’t simple (hence the longest style name ever). I grew up on a farm and still love the country and industrial barn style. I think that will always stick with me. But now, I’ve really embraced my bit of hippiness and gypsy soul. I love folk music, navajo, and fringed ponchos and I’ve finally gotten okay with admitting that! I used to feel that I got weird looks to my unique tastes and that made me shy away from it. I finally realized that number one, the weird looks were probably in my head. And number two, even if they weren’t, who cares? It’s all good. In comes some bohemian. As I said in Bringing in the Modern, I liked certain modern pieces of furniture, but didn’t feel like they “fit” with my defined style. So I finally bought my first piece of modern furniture that I always admired at thrift stores, but didn’t buy because it didn’t “fit” my style. Even though I loved it. And I bravely came home and sat it in my house. I loved images of eclectic rooms, but had no idea how to create that in my house because I wasn’t just going for it and learning through trial and error. I tried to figure out a room completely ahead of time and then start putting it all together. Now, I put a piece in a room and then layer things in. Some I like and they stay. Others I don’t and remove. The living room was the first room that felt like I accomplished what I set out to. Like with the mid-century chair, I layered on a “country” throw and a bohemian ottoman (the ottoman was slipcovered in $3 rag rugs – one of my favorite projects ever). Perfect mix. The weathered lantern above? Country, for sure. I fell in love with this Chesterfield tufted leather sofa on Craigslist. We about killed ourselves to bring it home, but it was all worth it as soon as we set it in our living room. The old me never would’ve paired that sofa with this white mid-century coffee table, but the new me? Throw it all in! And a Mexican blanket, kilim pillow, leopard, and a little glitter? It’s eclectic, alright. One of my favorite pieces I’ve ever found at a thrift store was this green tufted mid-century chair. It’s Gracie’s favorite for sure. I don’t even know what to call this new end table that I found on clearance at Home Goods. But I love it, so it came home. I realize my style isn’t for the faint of heart. But I sure do love it all eclectic and mixed up together 🙂 Make sure you head over to Laura’s blog, Finding Home. It’s the next stop in our series! Here’s the whole schedule, so you make sure and hit every one. I know there’s going to be some amazing style inspiration! Kristina says January 28, 2014 at 4:07 pm Your style may not be for the faint of heart, but it’s so awesome and uniquely you. Also, seeing how fearlessly you’ve gone after your crazy style (and how successful you’ve been!) has given me courage to go after my own crazy style, which so far is feeling like a mix of glam, modern, rustic, and lots of bright, happy colors. 🙂 Sadly, I can’t do too much because in the next year we’ll be busy getting the house ready to sell, but I’ll be ready to start right away on our new house! 🙂 Reply

I have always believed in buy what you love and my home shows it..I love so many different things, I love the elegance of french pieces… I love dreaming of the hidden stories of my old primitive chipping paint pieces, I Love the color and textures in native american tapestries.. and if i can convince my husband to take a trip to New Mexico I plan on bringing some of that home. and I dont know why but im dying to bring in a cowhide some where.. just been waiting to find a wonderful some what worn one.. for some reason when im in chain stores I look at brand new sparkling pieces and while I think they look nice my heart doesn’t jump for them like the old worn hand made pieces I find at antique stores on in the alley :).. we recently brought in a very old base cabinets with old drawer pulls.. I found a big butcher block that was used in an amarillo meat market here and it now sits in my builder grade kitchen in our new home..
