Home DecorUsing Art as Inspiration August 11, 2015I often get asked where I find inspiration for rooms and the answer is always varied. I look for inspiration everywhere. But one of my favorite ways to design a room is to use a great piece of art as the inspiration. There are so many great sources for art out there. These days, I’m loving everything from vintage to abstract. Statement pieces that can inspire a whole room’s design and color palette are my current fave. I recently created a room mood board for Zillow focusing on pairing summer colors: coral and aqua. Nothing says summer like these two colors and paired together, they really make a statement. Here, I took a colorful piece of art then designed around it. I picked out the two main colors from the piece, coral and aqua, and then used varying shades of them for the accessories. Using varying shades makes a room feel more collected and cohesive rather than just having two stark tones. Check out the full post on their blog for sources. If you’re looking for some room design inspiration, here are some of my current faves when it comes to statement-making art. They all have great color and could easily spark a room’s color palette and tone. {Click on each piece of art for source information.} Turn on your JavaScript to view content Once you choose a piece of art, pick out the two or three most prominent colors and rely on shades of those for most of the accessories. But I have a trade-secret to make the room feel perfectly collected instead of like it literally jumped out of the art. Choose a subtle color from the artwork…not the first few that grab your eye. Then, make a large item in the room that color: the sofa, a pair of chairs, or the rug. When you look at the room as a whole, it will all go together, but by choosing a subtle color in the art to use in a prominent way, it won’t look so matchy-matchy. Now I’m off to check in at the new house. The entire addition is getting sheet rock today! That’s going to really make the new part come to life and I absolutely can’t wait! I can’t believe it’s about time to start moving in furniture and actually hanging art on the walls. It’s about to get exciting, friends. *** To follow our renovation journey every step of the way, make sure you subscribe to posts! They come straight to your inbox when posted.
