Home DecorThe Laundry Room Design Plan June 24, 2015I did something I’ve never done. I chose a major element of a room before anything else was designed. The deadline for the laundry tile came and I still had no design plan. Remember my struggle with this room and the guest bathroom? Well, the struggle was real, y’all. And I couldn’t for the life of me design this room! I chose a classic tile in an interesting pattern, knowing/hoping I could design something around it I would love. The tile is a bit more white in person, but I am loving it! It’s from Home Depot and has a bit of dimension in it kind of like the wood plank tile. We found it in our local store and I’m searching for it online, but haven’t found it yet. I’ll update with a link when I do! We went with dark gray grout so that the herringbone pattern would really stand out against the white tile. And this room got tiled long before I had any design plan. This is obviously a very functional room, but I want it to be pretty too. This room actually has multiple functions for us and we designed the exact dimensions to fit our needs. Yes, it will be a laundry room. But it will also house a permanent place for Miss Gracie’s crate. She only goes in her crate when we have guests who are uncomfortable with large dogs or a big group of people, but in our current home, we didn’t have a spot to leave her crate set up. And we needed it! So, her crate will go in this room with countertop over it and her food and water will also be in here. Everything will go on the wall you see from the door (crate, washer, dryer, and counter all across), so that is a perfect focal wall. Slowly, but surely, this room has come together in my head. It’s funny to me how much this plan fits my overall design plan. Yes, my goal was to have all rooms feel cohesive and follow a single color palette. But I was so desperate to design this space, I wasn’t working to make it fit that plan. It just happened. I guess it shows how much I’m really digging that color palette! Here is the laundry room design plan: My inspiration for this room came when I found the Minted art print. I am so in love with so many prints from Minted right now. I want to just fill this house with them! But I headed over there to look for inspiration, knowing I would find some. I decided a nice butcher block counter would add a rich element to the room. I always like having atleast one wood element in every room I design. It seems to ground it for me. 1: Once I had the art, I remembered this tempaper I’ve been dying to try. Do y’all remember my wallpaper post? Most of you agreed it probably isn’t worth the hassle. But, not long after that I found a brand called Tempaper. I fell in love with this white and gold peony paper and wanted to use it. It will be perfect on the focal wall over the counter. 2: I knew I wanted a rustic light of some sort. Y’all know I like things balanced and the art and wallpaper needed to be brought down a notch. When I saw this dark teal (hello color palette!) barn light, I was old and knew it would be perfect. 3. I love this fabric to create a skirt for under the counter. My goal is to atleast cover Gracie’s crate area, but have it on a rod where it can easily be pulled back. 4. Some bright coral accessories like this tray would be a great pop in this mainly neutral room. I love how it pulls the peach tones from the art and fabric, but is brightened. Have y’all seen the Poppin site? I am in love with all of their solid color accessories (in every pop of color you can imagine!). 5. These mint knobs from Anthropologie are so pretty and feel vintage to me. I think they’d look great on a cabinet over the counter (considering shelves, but may do a cabinet for closed storage). It’s so funny that this room was stumping me and now it’s a room I’m most excited about. I think laundry is going to be a lot more fun once this pretty room is in place. Gracie may even choose to hang out in her crate some! *** To follow our renovation journey every step of the way, make sure you subscribe to posts! They come straight to your inbox when posted. Sara says September 24, 2015 at 12:24 pm You actually found a crate sized for a 110 lb. great dane! Where?! Our dane is getting up there in years (he’s almost 8), but I suspect we’ll have another one in our future eventually. They’re just sweet dogs and he’s been great with our new little one (almost 4 months). We were never able to find a good sized crate for him and end up just closing him in our bedroom if we have a lot of guests over. I’d love to know where you found your crate?! Thanks, Sara Reply
Lindsay says September 25, 2015 at 11:13 am Hi Sara, we just got an XL metal wire crate. She’s small for the breed, so I know if she was any larger she wouldn’t fit! And she only goes in it for an hour here or there when people are over. She has full reign of the house day and night even when we’re gone (and thankfully does awesome with that!). I wouldn’t want to leave her in it any longer because she doesn’t have a ton of extra room, but she can stand up and turn around in it! Reply
