Home DecorPlans for Rosie’s Big Girl Room August 6, 2017Well, guys, we’re moved in. Friends keep asking if we’re settled and we are so far from it. But we’re getting there. We’re chipping away at it piece by piece. And we’re not too far from the really fun part: when all of my designing and planning will really start taking shape. All of the hard work of packing and moving our family is behind and I’m dying to start sharing more about our spaces…the plans and how they’re starting to come together! I’m planning to tackle Rosie’s room first. A lot of y’all may have seen my recent Instagram post about how this move has affected her. She was so excited about “the new house,” but I just didn’t process what it would actually be like for her to see the only home she remembers packed into boxes. Her books, her toys, all that’s familiar loaded up and her home left empty. Watching Rosie go through this has reminded me so much of the value of what I do: creating home. For the last six months or so, whenever we’d pull into the driveway, Rosie would shout “Hooray we’re home!” It melted my heart. So the reality of leaving that place and moving somewhere new was a little jarring for her. We’re a little over two weeks into living here and the first bit was tough. None of Rosie’s stuff was unpacked and she was so thrown. We’ve tried to get her set up as much as possible. There’s still a ways to go on her space, but it’s more functional and I’m planning to work toward finishing it first so she has a pretty, organized space to enjoy. I’m so excited to share where we’re headed in her space with you! First off, let’s talk layout and function. You may remember this room is functioning as Rosie’s room and our playroom. In the last house, we had two separate rooms for this. We had to weed out what would actually fit and downsize some of her stuff, but we came up with a plan where all the necessities work. Here’s a little diagram of how we’re laying out her furniture. The darker tan rectangles are doors and windows. First off, this is not remotely to scale. I just put together a quick diagram for you to get a picture. I actually measured and measured Rosie’s stuff and this room and drew diagrams before moving to make sure it would work. Combining these spaces is one thing I was most worried about because I wanted the room to function well and Rosie have her favorites in here. After we moved in, we set the room up several different ways and this one I’d planned ahead of time worked best for sure. In person, there is a lot more open floor space and clearance in the center around her little table. Rosie has officially moved into a big girl bed. In some ways, we hated for her to have so much change at once, but a lot of people had recommended to us that moving was a good time to change beds…build up excitement and talk a lot about her new special room with her new bed. So that’s what we did. Then her bed was delayed a week and a half, so she had her crib to start. It came, though, and Rosie has been thrilled for her new bed. She has loved it and has done amazing in it, thank goodness! In addition to the twin bed, we definitely needed a dresser for storage and a changing table (hopefully that won’t be needed much longer). I wanted her favorite toys: the teepee, kitchen, and kids’ table. She used all three of these a ton in the last playroom, so I wanted them here. And then we needed storage. Only one of the bins from the last playroom fits in here, but I have a spot to use the other one for storage elsewhere in the house. It’ll function as toy storage and a nightstand. Then, we have a little trunk we bought Rosie when I was expecting her for keepsakes and toys. It fits perfectly at the foot of her bed. I was very skeptical before we got in here that it would actually work, but it all fits great! I’ve said often that my goal for this house was to re-use as much as we possibly could from the last house. As I start sharing more room plans and then room reveals, I think y’all will see how much we’re keeping from the last house, but using with different combinations and in different rooms. Rosie’s room is a great example of that. Rosie has asked for a pink room for forever. She immediately latched onto that color awhile back and so I knew I wanted to bring that in for her. Her playroom in the last house had a lot of pink, so I assumed I’d be able to re-purpose a lot from there. I started picturing pink walls and really wanted to do floral curtains again. I really want to play up the girly in her room. That feels like a natural place to be super girly, especially now that we’ve added a little boy. Future playrooms won’t be the pink haven her last one was. The floral curtains I had in her last room will be used elsewhere in this house – they don’t look so hot against pink walls with the oranges and peaches. Before I even started looking for fabrics, I stumbled on this one at Hobby Lobby. Oh my goodness, I loved it! I loved that it is roses for our sweet Rosie girl. And I loved all of the color! I knew it would look great against blush walls, but I also loved the freedom it gave me to use all kinds of different colors in her room. It has berry, red, lavender, blue, green, yellow…I LOVE IT. And I immediately realized how much from Rosie’s playroom would work in here! Here’s a little glimpse at where we’re headed with some things we already had! Turn on your JavaScript to view content You may remember from the painted bedroom post that we went with Benjamin Moore Bridal Pink on the walls. It’s the perfect blush that has just enough pink in it. And the curtain fabric looks so good against it! We haven’t made the curtains yet, but that’s next on the list. Right now, we have thumb-tacked blankets over her windows and while functional, the rooms feels a pretty disheveled. I love how it looks with the red/pink lamps and Flamingo print from her playroom: For a rug, I wanted to re-use something we had if I could. I immediately knew which of our rugs fit with the curtains and after getting it in the room, it’s PERFECT with the pink walls in my mind. Y’all remember this rug from our last living room right??? It looks so different in her room and I’m loving seeing how versatile pieces can be if you think outside the box. Beyond those basic items like the pink walls, berry rug, and floral curtains, I’m planning to first layer on A LOT OF NEUTRAL TEXTURE. I’m going with these white Pillowfort target sheets with gold hearts, a plain white quilt, white ruffle bedskirt, and then I’ll layer on the Moroccan wedding blanket I made. Turn on your JavaScript to view content I also want to add in some FUN, GIRLY WHIMSY. I’ll be doing that in a lot of different ways, but this little ice cream pillow from Land of Nod gives you an idea. While I don’t want to go with an overly flamingo theme, Rosie loves them and I got this flamingo head for her 2nd birthday pink party. It’ll definitely be making an appearance! Turn on your JavaScript to view content And like I said above, I want it to feel really girly for her. I fell in love with this Anthropologie capiz light. All the lights were sold with the last house, so we knew lighting is something we’d need new in every space. Can’t you just picture it in the room bouncing light off the pink walls? The Medium size felt like the right size for her room, but I couldn’t justify the $798 price tag on this, y’all. I resolved to find something similar. And then I heard about Final Cut. It’s in Augusta, GA and gets tons of Anthropologie stuff. If y’all are anywhere near, you must go! The furniture, lighting, and home stuff is unreal. But you see where this is headed….I found the medium version of this light fixture for…wait for it…$150! In perfect condition. I snatched that baby right up! Okay, this post is getting long, but there is so much to share about her coming room! Last thing for today…y’all know I like every room to have a wood element. Well, we’re bringing that in with a wood-spindle twin bed from my dad. I love bringing in family pieces wherever you can! This bed was in my family’s lakehouse growing up and now Rosie will get to enjoy it. Here’s a little teensy glimpse: Empty walls, so much still to come, but it already feels special for our girl. I’ll share more as it starts coming together bit by bit! *** That’s been The White Buffalo motto for the last three years and is still what I’m striving to do each day in our home and with our family. Yes, that often means tablescapes, inspiring interiors, and fun before and after renos. But it also means family. Faith. Joy. Struggles. Laughter. Health. You’ll find a little bit of all of that here as I share how we’re choosing to live with both style and purpose. A huge part of that is our journey toward a more natural life that’s focused on enjoying each and every moment together. A huge thanks to my main blog sponsor that makes this dream of mine possible:
Alyson Bird says August 7, 2017 at 7:55 am I don’t know if you have seen the capiz shell lights at World Market. They are dead ringers for the anthropologie one you have in shots. Good luck with getting everything pulled together Reply

Rachel Winchester says August 7, 2017 at 9:53 am So sweet! Such a big girl! I love all the plans and how you are repurposing a lot of stuff from the old house in different combinations. That is definitely a feat. It can be challenging to rework rugs, furniture, etc. I look forward to seeing the progress and finished room! Reply

Traci Busker says August 7, 2017 at 10:14 am I’ve been following along for a while but have never commented- I have been so inspired by your journey to pay off your debt and live more simply. That has been the desire of my heart for years and to read along with your journey has been so affirming. I love the use of this space for your little girl! So efficient while still being lovely. I just wanted to leave a tip for anyone who might fall in love with that capiz light- both World Market and Pottery Barn have similar pendants on their website for $150-$200 (and both sites frequently sent out coupons). Thank you for sharing your home with your readers! Reply

Austin says August 8, 2017 at 10:49 am Yay! Love the plans, can’t wait to see it come together. But most of all, so RELIEVED her old curtains will be used elsewhere. I still daydream about those beauties and would insist on buying them from you if they weren’t going to make the cut for the new house! 😉 Reply

Kristin says August 17, 2017 at 7:53 pm I can’t wait to see what you do! I really find your mission, your values, your goals with debt and money inspiring. It’s more then just a beautiful rooms or a house it’s a total way of life just to enjoy the journey your family is in that season. We don’t have a lot of debt but we do have our own issues with money ( I think everyone probably does) and trying to be an intentionalist and not let consumerism put us in debt. My grandfather was from the Great Depression and he said if he didn’t have cash he didn’t buy it. He was a cpa and he had no debt and had saved up a considerable amount of money and had 7 kids! He’s my hero! Sorry for the long comment. I just have been following you a long time and just felt prompted to comment today. Keep up your wonderful blog and thank you! Reply
