UncategorizedOur DIY Headboard May 26, 2011Well, I’m finally back. I’ve spent the last few days recuperating. I had no clue how tired I would be after it was all over! But, it was the most perfect night ever. I can’t wait to share pictures as soon as we get them from the photographer! On a different note, I posted some shots of our in-progress master bedroom recently and wanted to share some more details about our DIY headboard. Here are a few more shots of how it looks now: This is what we started with: I found this old french door at Goodwill for $20. I will admit, my first thought when I saw it was not “Oh a headboard!”. But it was just too good of a deal to pass up. I paid for it, brought my sweet husband back with me to lift it into the car (it was seriously that heavy), and brought it home to decide how to use it. About the same time, we were in need of a headboard. I wanted a gorgeous fabric headboard like you’re seeing everywhere right now, but Chris wasn’t so sure. We decided to go for something a little more rustic to fit the two of us. Chris had the great idea of somehow turning this door into a headboard! I had the vision for how to finish it out. Chris and my dad had the know-how to build the frame and make it happen. First, we had to saw a little off of each side. It was so much wider than our Queen bed! Then, they started building the frame. They put a two by four on each side and then two running horizontally to connect them. It didn’t take them very long at all and we had this: Once we knew it fit, we lugged it back downstairs for painting and finishing. We went with a gray color that would match our bedroom. I didn’t want it to be too matchy-matchy, but I wanted it to coordinate well. So, I picked a shade of gray out of the window valance that I was using to make our bolster pillow here: First, we sanded off the old stained finish with our handy palm sander. Then, it was time for the paint. I thought it would need at least two coats, but since I wanted a more rustic feel and was planning to sand some paint off anyway, one coat did the trick! In this shot, you can get a better idea of the frame they built: After the paint was dry, I sanded all of the edges by hand to let a little of the natural wood shine through. And here she sits today:

Tracy K-C says March 30, 2012 at 7:48 pm WOW. I have 4 really old french doors in my garage waiting for me to do something with them, this is definitely where one is going. We just bought a king size bed 2 days ago (we up-sized from a double) and are saving for a new headboard. My husband will most definitely go along with this idea! I’m using the 2 of the other doors as ‘doors’, one as a pocket door on the master bedroom and another in the new bathroom renovations. Now to just find a place for the 4th door and he will stop nagging me to get them out of the garage!! Wonderful job, going to spend some time going through the rest of your blog now! Reply
