Home DecorMixing Modern and Rustic Style in the New House November 13, 2015This is a sponsored post by LexMod. All opinions are 100% my own. My trademark is mixing styles. I have a long-standing history with all things rustic and farmhouse and country. I grew up in on a farm out in what people from my hometown like to call “God’s Country.” Farmhouse style was easy for me, like second-nature. It has long been my go-to style. But several years ago, not that long before The White Buffalo began, I fell in love with mid-century modern. I loved the clean lines and the unique shapes. It couldn’t be farther from my country roots. But I didn’t go all-modern. In fact, what I loved best about this new-to-me style was how it paired with my rustic textures and aged patinas. In our last house, I had a blast mixing these two styles together. In the kitchen, the modern bar stools, modern stainless shelving, and stainless hood contrast just like I’d hoped against my beadboard walls and rustic live-edge island. All rooms got a taste of this mix. Mid-century armchairs with an old kilim rug and weathered lantern light, a mid-century hutch with a cowhide rug and antlers. I’ve found that infusing a little clean and modern has really become the finishing touch in my designs. While I love rustic woods, distressed finishes, and all things antler, it can be a little heavy for me if it isn’t balanced with a light-handed modern touch. My main goal when I started designing our new place was to clearly bring in both of these styles in every single space. I’m just really starting to choose art and the finishing touches in the first room or two, but here’s a glimpse at the overall feel I’m going for (and these pieces may just be showing up in some coming designs!).
