Layered Living Room Reveal

It’s been quite a journey to finish up this room, friends.  I don’t think I’ve ever done a reveal that was a year in the making!  If you’ve missed it, make sure you check out the living room progress and stages post to see how this space has developed over time.

This room developed much more slowly than others I’ve done because we got some of the basic things done when we first moved in last September since we knew we’d be enjoying this room most, but once it was livable we moved on to finish other areas.

This main view was finished for the most part fairly early.  I bought the berry rug at an antique store.  We completed the fireplace and painted it my new favorite dark green, Benjamin Moore Hidden Falls.  And I found the over-sized chandelier at Goodwill for $125, spray painted it pale blue and added in some modern bulbs.  This view was my first vision for the room and I love seeing it completed.

The abstract is from Minted and we got it last fall as well.  I absolutely love how the colors in it tie the entire room together so well.  I layered this black and white elk photo for a small hint of rustic.  The photo is an old iStock image that I found and had printed.

One of the main new things in the room is the Moroccan Wedding Blanket Ottoman that we made.  I knew that I wanted some sort of upholstered ottoman as a coffee table because it’s so kid-friendly.  My plan was to make an over-sized Moroccan inspired ottoman, but realized that it had to be smaller than I initially pictured for play space.  We live in this room and Rosie plays in the floor and Gracie lays around.  So this ottoman gives me the feel I was looking for, but doesn’t take up all of our floor space.

I filled this back corner with some layered plants.  I really wanted a tall tree, but to save money, I put this palm up on a plant stand of sorts.  We actually had it out in the screened porch and this summer heat was killing it, so I moved it inside and my problems with this empty little corner were fixed!  I love the touches of greenery in here.

My plan for this room was to really use the rug as inspiration.  While it’s mainly berry, up close, it has a ton of blues and greens.  We pulled out the dark green for the fireplace and then for accents, I’ve relied mainly on shades of blue so that the room doesn’t feel too bright and overly colorful for my taste.

I am still so in love with our Arhaus chairs.  The dyed geometric fabric is so perfect for my style and I love how it pairs with the rug.

I added these very pale blush velvet pillows and I love the color mix over here.

This mix is now one of my favorite parts in the room with the chairs, blush pillows, the rug, and that chippy table in between.  This feels like such a representation of all the things I love in one little spot.

I’ve debated and debated what to do with this big pantry wall that juts out into the space.  I considered several different options, but just kept coming back to the idea that it needed to fill a lot of the vertical space, but also be subtle and not take away from the rest of the room.   I got the idea from my sweet friend Eileen of A Creative Day Blog to hang a table runner in a tall vertical spot like that.  I had this woven and embroidered super long piece of fabric that I’ve been using as a table runner for awhile and realized it was perfect!

It’s mainly plain and neutral so it doesn’t steal the show too much, but it does have a hint of color and texture with the fringe.

I think my favorite part of this room is how it feels layered, just as I’d hoped.  I’ve loved adding each little layer to this space!

That’s been The White Buffalo motto for the last three years and is still what I’m striving to do each day in our home and with our family.  Yes, that often means tablescapes, inspiring interiors, and fun before and after renos.  But it also means family.   Faith.  Joy.  Struggles.  Laughter.  Health.  You’ll find a little bit of all of that here as I share how we’re choosing to live with both style and purpose.

A huge part of that is our journey toward a more natural life that’s focused on enjoying each and every moment together.  A huge thanks to my main blog sponsor that makes this dream of mine possible:

Your rooms continue to amaze me! The room is warm, family friendly, and unstuffy. Perfect! I have followed your blog for years. I am ‘stealing’ the table runner wall hanging idea!

Lindsay, I just love your room so very much!!! I especially love the layering and textiles. It looks so unique, warm and inviting. I have a Moroccan wedding blanket that looks similar to yours, and I had it on my dining bench then moved it to the sofa. I love the ottoman you made with yours. It looks wonderful and I’m sure you all enjoy spending time in there:-)

In. Love. And was about to ask about a tutorial for that ottoman, but you beat me to it! Was the trunk just not the right fit? The room looks incredible, Linds! I’d never leave the house.

Just love how you styled this room. That wedding blanket ottomon is to die for. I like how you hung the runner as a tapestry on that wall. I like how that plant in the blue vase pops in front of the window. Of course, I have long admired the chandy, the rug, the artwork, the fireplace, the moody green that surrounds it. You are the best!! And never doubt yourself. Because you are the daughter of the King, and your identity is in Christ. NOTHING is better than that. Always remember how your worth is not in how the world sees you, but your worth is how God sees you. We are clothed in His righteousness, we are His. Satan can not touch us when we rebuke him in the name of Jesus!! You are precious in God’s sight!! Don’t ever forget that!! Love you sister in Christ!

The entire room is stunning! Your use of textiles, the fireplace color, the tapestry (wall hanging), rugs and the ottoman! I just love how you create such a warm and inviting space using color that is not overpowering. I so wish you were my neighbor! A little help would go a long way ~ πŸ™‚

I love this room! I love how it feels layered without feeling cluttered. I love how some things don’t match, but look great together. It’s so beautiful! Great job as always!

It looks great! I’m glad to see you took your time. After 6 months my living room is still stumping me.

Love this!! I am so smitten with that green on your fireplace and never would have thought I’d love it so much. Such a gorgeous space, as are all your spaces. I can’t wait to see the kitchen hehe πŸ™‚

Absolutely love this! Especially the pop of color the rug gives to the space. What size is this rug? I really like the size, and want something similar for my living room!

Hi Lindsay. I’m on Pinterest everyday looking for room design inspiration that goes with my taste. I always feel like I come up short until I saw the post of your living room. I feel like I’m looking at my living room. I love modern lines but crave rustic design. I tend to stumble on mixing my decor completely until now. You haven given me that final push to keep going with modern rustic and realizing decorating with items you love can make any room work.
