Home DecorOur Kitchen Before & After January 30, 2014So, with Our Renovation Story, I didn’t really get to the biggest part of that story: The Kitchen. I quickly realized in doing that little series that there was no way I was going to fit “Our Renovation Story” into three weeks. Number 1: I couldn’t fit all we’ve done into that! Number 2: We still have quite a bit of house left to renovate. So….I’ve decided that Our Renovation Story will be an ongoing thing. I’ll tag all posts with that category, so that each one can easily be found. I don’t know when more will come, but readers will be able to find the whole story under that category. Onto the kitchen… When we moved into this house, this room was considered the “master.” I had to laugh at that. Sure, it was 10×20 or so. But it was a garage, people. A very poorly converted garage. These before pictures don’t even do it justice. The carpet was laid straight down over cement. The wall paneling was really poorly stuck over studs. It was just bad. Here was the view from our now living room before: And here it is after: You can read about how we opened up those walls here. Here’s another before: And an after from a similar view: When designing this room, I knew I wanted a white kitchen with some punches of color and open shelving. I pictured an all-white kitchen and the first thing I bought was the rug. It’s a 10 foot Kilim runner from eBay. It was a splurge for me at $200, but I love it. We actually designed the kitchen around it to make sure it would fit. We went floor to ceiling with beadboard for texture. The beadboard, lower cabinets, and shelves are painted Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. For the shelves, I wanted a modern bracket to balance the other styles in the room. The shelves are wood that we cut to size from Home Depot. The modern, stainless brackets are from IKEA. I absolutely love having them to style. For the island, I wanted to bring in some rustic. You can read the story about our Live Edge Island here. The wood top came from a tree we cut down in our backyard. I designed the base and Chris built it so that there would be room for bar stools on one side and shelves for storage on the other. I love having a place to store my platters and cookbooks. I love the little baking and coffee station in the corner of the room. It’s pretty, but also functional. Everything I need is at my fingertips. I have long been in love with farmhouse sinks, so this beauty from IKEA was a must. The granite is one of my favorite parts of the room. It’s Pretoria White. I really wanted marble, but had heard mixed reviews and knew granite was stronger and more durable. This marble-looking granite fit the bill. I have gotten really into cooking lately, so this kitchen has become my happy place. Here are an overall list of sources: Hood: IKEA Appliances: Frigidaire Paint: Benjamin Moore White Dove Island Base Paint: Olympic Smoky Emerald Rug: Turkish Kilim from eBay Countertops: Pretoria White Granite Farmhouse Sink: IKEA Faucet: IKEA And most importantly, Miss Gracie approves. She loves lying on the kitchen rug.

Jennifer @ Brave New Home says January 31, 2014 at 12:28 am I love your kitchen! I never thought about using Ikea brackets with custom wood. I have those brackets plus the wood from Ikea and love them. I love all your color choices—especially how it’s white but still has color and personality. And yes, I love the look of marble but I’ll be getting granite in our home, too. Reply

Laura says April 11, 2014 at 9:10 am Yes, yes, yes to that island! Are you going to show us the bar stools? I’m considering bead board as a back splash. Are you happy you ran it all the way to the ceiling? I’m thinking of maybe just up to the lower shelves/cabinets. Hmmmm but yours looks so good… And is it easy to keep clean? Reply

Lindsay says March 27, 2015 at 11:48 am Thanks so much, Sue! I am a “designer” of sorts…I design our personal projects, share design inspiration on the blog, and design for Scout and Nimble. But I currently don’t do design work for clients – I was doing a bit of that and had to prioritize due to time 🙂 Reply
