UncategorizedKitchen Series Day 2: Open Shelving Extravaganza March 12, 2013Welcome to Day 2 of my little kitchen series! Yesterday, we talked about big-ticket items like cabinets and appliances. What we’ve decided to go with actually lines up with what we love and resale trends…sort of. You see, when I said cabinets yesterday, I meant lower cabinets. Yep, that’s right, we’re not having one upper cabinet in the entire kitchen. Even though I’ve never had open shelving, I’ve had it in my head for the last two years. I am so a fan of the new open shelving trend. My entire Pinterest Kitchen board is filled with lovely images like this: {via} And this: {via} Oh, I love the chalkboard wall behind the shelves! We won’t be doing that one in this house, but it’s awfully pretty and fun! {via} I adore these dark industrial shelves. I was a bit tempted to go with something unique like this, but am worried that I’d get tired of seeing it everyday. Maybe, maybe not. Either way, I’m not sold on it enough and we’ll be sticking with a classic white. This was one major place that I was willing to let resale go a bit for what I love. I love the openness that it provides in the room and the display possibilities are endless! {via} {via} I’ve heard many people argue that this isn’t practical and I recognize that I won’t totally know the answer to this until I’ve lived with them for a little while. But, perfect timing, Lauren from Pure Style Home posted about her open shelving this morning and how much she loves living with them. In fact, the kitchen in her last house is my inspiration image for our shelving. I love how the fridge looks almost built in with the shelving. On the longest wall in our kitchen, we will have the refridgerator on one end and then lots of room for shelving. The walls in the kitchen will be bead board, as Lauren’s are here. I just love how it looks behind the shelves. We’re probably going with white brackets and white shelves, but we haven’t found them yet. This is my favorite part of the new kitchen and the one thing that I really wasn’t willing to compromise on. I know that this is a huge trend and I love it, so maybe the buyer that one day walks in this house will too. But they may not… And I’ve weighed that chance and am okay with our odds. I know not everyone “approves” of this design decision with us potentially selling the house one day, but as I said yesterday, it’s your house and you have to live in it. Only you can decide which compromises you will make all in the name of resale. Tomorrow, countertops…

Lindsay says March 12, 2013 at 2:53 pm Thanks, Jennifer!!! I’m loving it too and SO excited to get them installed. I’m already picturing them decorated for each season…art, wreaths, pumpkins, holly, the list goes on and on…I’m getting ahead of myself, though. That room currently doesn’t even have walls! Reply
