Welcome to my Holiday Housewalk!
If you are headed over here from Jen Rizzo’s, welcome! I am so happy to take part in her Christmas tour series this year. I have followed this series since long before I started blogging and always love the beautiful Christmas inspiration! It almost feels like a little Christmas dream come true to be taking part.
When decorating for Christmas, I know that there will be rustic elements. We both love rustic decor and with our faux beams and rustic touches, it just fits. But I always try to put our own spin on it. I start by looking for an inspiration piece that will inspire the rest of my holiday decor.
Some years it’s a feeling. Some it’s a certain look or style. This year, it was a color scheme.
I found this vintage woven tree skirt above at a thrift store and fell in love with the color scheme: navy, red, turquoise, and peach. I knew I had to have it for our Christmas home and it really did inspire the rest of my choices this Christmas.
While I usually do a very themed tree with some form of a DIY garland, I went a little bit of a different route this year. I didn’t use any garlands and just went for very heavy ornaments in our color scheme.
I did DIY a few ornaments. I couldn’t resist! I used scrapbook paper and paper mache ornaments and had some unique printed ornaments that I am loving!
For the tree topper, I went relied on a little rustic Christmas charm. I found this red berry candle wreath at Hobby Lobby and thought it would be perfect perched atop my tree.
I love the traditional Christmas vibe that it adds to the non-traditional color scheme.
I love my colorful tree this year!
My absolute favorite part of Christmas decorating is the mantel. It is every single year.
This year it was even more because we just re-did the fireplace! You can see the before and after and read about the renovation here.
I’m loving the black brick and how my Christmas pretties pop against it.
I love to mix patterns.
In carrying out my color scheme, I decided to rely mainly on red with the other colors thrown in. These pillows from Home Decorator’s were perfect! And my favorite rug form eBay worked great too.
And who knew kilim and plaid could look so good together?
The magnolia garland is from Balsam Hill.
I’ve dreamed of a magnolia garland for so long and this one is seriously beautiful! I am so in love with it.
I decided to keep my Christmas mantel simple this year. Some layered, contrasting art is just enough with the sconces, garland, stockings, and new fire screen.
I got the floral at a thrift store and love how it brings out a little red. I got the deer print online awhile ago, but had it blown up as at Staples using their engineer prints. I love those!
This fire screen is one of my new favorite things. It’s a DIY that we did for our recent Home Depot Holiday Challenge and I can’t wait to share the tutorial this week!
It is so easy for the impact it makes!
There are so many things I love about Christmas. I love the glistening lights. I love the cozy textures. I love the greenery and garlands galore.
But for our family, Christmas most of all is about anticipating Jesus’ birth.
My most treasured part of our Christmas decor this year is the DIY Advent Calendar I put together.
You can read about how I made it here.
But the overall idea is that each day, we remove one of the doily ornaments from the garland and place it on the Advent tree.
While the dates are written on the front, that day’s Advent verse is written on the back. We’ll spend a few minutes each day reading that verse as a family and preparing our hearts for the coming of the King.
There is no doubt that Christmas is a magical time.
But my goal this Christmas as I keep decorating, bake cookies, and wrap presents is to remember that all of these festive preparations are for one purpose: CELEBRATION.
Celebration because the Light of the World came down and was laid in a manger for each of us.
Now that is a reason to string some lights and hang some garlands!
Merry Christmas, y’all!
I’ll continue sharing Christmas projects and decorating ideas over the next few weeks. I just can’t stop myself from decorating over here!
