UncategorizedFalling in Love with Colonial New England October 7, 2014 Amuck, amuck, amuck, amuck! If you follow me on Instagram, you know that we’ve been “babymooning” in Maine last week, a.k.a walking through the movie set of the best Halloween movie of all time, Hocus Pocus. I have always dreamed of going to Maine in the fall. Since I saw Hocus Pocus as a child (and then watched it every year since), I’ve been in love with the idea of New England coastal towns, colonial architecture, and fall at every turn. I dreamed that Maine would be like that and it did not disappoint, y’all! Though I did get a few weird looks for using “y’all.” We were in desperate need of a low-key trip. After traveling nearly every week all summer and then everything that happened with Papa, it feels like we’re finally able to catch our breath. Spending a few days leisurely walking around small, charming New England towns was just what the doctor ordered. I loved the food – lobster rolls are a new favorite. I loved the views of the coast. Walking Marginal Way in Ogunquit is a must. And you have to do it at sunrise. It was early and it was cold, but it was so quiet down by the coast and this was one of my favorite things we did. I loved the New England charm and the old, old buildings. {this is Kennebunkport above} But more than anything, and I know there’s no surprise here, I loved walking through the downtown residential areas. In Kennebunkport, there are streets and streets of old colonial homes within walking distance of the charming downtown area. We spent hours walking around, reading the placards of when they were built, and taking lots of photos. 1850 is “new” there, y’all. It was crazy to see homes built in 1700’s. I’ve always had an appreciation for Colonial and Victorian homes, but on this trip, I officially fell in love. I love the charm, the yards, the porches. I could just see families lives playing out there. Kids playing out front as bright colored leaves drift lazily to the ground. History and charm at every turn… We stayed at The Black Boar Inn in Ogunquit and it was built in 1674. There’s an original fireplace inside that takes up an entire wall and a huge farm table in front of it where we had breakfast with other visitors each day. I meant to get a picture and am now kicking myself that I didn’t! The houses alone made me feel like I was walking through the streets of Hocus Pocus. But what made this dream-like for me was the fall decorations. You guys, they do it right there. Everywhere you look, there are piles of pumpkins and mums. I’ve determined that Maine is officially the perfect fall destination. And maybe, just maybe, restoring an old colonial is somewhere in my future. Now, I’m ready to go watch Hocus Pocus and add fifty more pumpkins to our house…

Lindsey says October 7, 2014 at 1:46 pm K-Port! I live in NH, but my in-laws own a small motel in Cape Porpoise, just a few minutes north of Kennebunkport. It’s our home away from home and visit whenever we get time to sneak away. Such a beautiful place. Glad you enjoyed your visit! Reply

I grew up in the northeast, where the history is everywhere, and you can feel it.The homes in my little town were one hundred+ years old, and every street lined with mature trees. Great post – I loved reading it. Reply
