UncategorizedDIY Copper and Wood Block Candlesticks September 29, 2014If you’re hopping over here from Melody at My Passion for Decor, welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. I can’t wait to show you what she thrifted and sent me and what I did with it! Welcome to a fall edition of Swap it Like it’s Hot! I had the best time participating in this series hosted by Jessica of Gourley Girl and Guy and Charlotte from Ciburbanity last spring. Here’s the concept. Someone thrifts some treasures and they mail them to you. With that, you create a DIY or use them some way in your home. You thrift some treasures and send them on to someone else to do the same. Get it? It’s a brilliant idea and a fun way to mix it up in this DIY world of ours. Last spring, I used my items to create a quick Jewelry Drop Station on my dresser. So, without further ado, Melody sent me some lovely little treasures. She sent me a bag of ten plain wooden blocks like these. And this lovely little ceramic owl. He’s so rustic and perfect for fall. And for some reason, I have the urge to name him Freddie. So, when I first saw these, I was thrilled. I loved the little owl and all of it’s detailing so painting him a solid color like I did my last animal figurine didn’t seem right. I decided to just keep him and use him as part of a vignette. The original Freddie is too cute, I think. But the wood blocks got me thinking. I was so excited because the possibilities were endless! My goal, as it is with most DIY’s (though some get more complicated) was to come up with something that anyone could do with basic tools in five minutes. After a little brainstorming and realizing that I have some copper pipe left over from my current Home Depot Style Challenge (Harvest premiering soon!), I knew what these little blocks were destined to be. CANDLESTICKS! I love copper pipe. I mean, don’t we all? But my favorite is copper pipe mixed with wood, especially raw wood. I don’t know why, but I am so loving that right now. So, these get me excited. Here’s how I made them. First, we used a Paddle Bit to drill a 3/4″ hole in six of the blocks. You can see we just went about half an inch down. These holes will be to attach the copper pipe into. Then, we drilled a hole on the opposite side of three of the blocks. So, three of the six blocks will serve as bases for the candlesticks. They only need a hole on one side to fit the copper pipe into. The other three will serve as the top piece, so they need a hole on the top to fit a taper candle in and a hole on the bottom to fit the pipe in. Make sense? Okay, so here’s the slightly tricky part. We used 1/2″ copper pipe, but a 1/2″ Paddle Bit doesn’t create quite a big enough hole. So, you have to go with the 3/4″ hole drilled in, but that doesn’t create a snug fit with the pipe. So, this baby comes in. Fill three of the blocks’ holes with a decent amount of glue. Then, insert your copper pipe and give it time to set. You may need to prop them against something to get the copper pipe to set perfectly straight. One of the two required this when we were making them. Once, they’ve set (about fifteen minutes for our glue, but make sure to read the instructions on the glue label), do the same for the top block and let them set. Then, you have candlesticks, my friends! A traditional taper candle is 3/4″ so it fits snugly and stands up straight into the 3/4″ holes we drilled. Voila! And of course, Mr. Freddy got his time in the limelight with this little fall mantel update. Doesn’t he look pleased? I love how they turned out and they took five minutes (not counting dry time). Now that’s my kind of project. Thanks for the goods, Melody! Now, hope on over to Jessica’s blog to see what she did with my thrifted finds!
