UncategorizedDay 17: 31 Days of Finishing Rooms October 17, 2011Okay, I need some advice for finishing our lamps. Remember, this is the room and colors that I’m working with… I’m working with the white bedding, tan linen curtains, greenish/gray walls, and gray headboard. I think I’ve narrowed the lamps options down to two choices, but I can’t decide which to go with in here. I’m hoping you guys can help me and maybe you have some different ideas all together. Here’s what I’m starting with – $4 lamp bases from Goodwill… Of course, I’m going to get rid of the flowers and go with a solid finish on the base. I’m really drawn to burlap/linen lamp shades. I’m sure you know this by the living room – all tan linen lamp shades! Something like this maybe, but a cheaper version… So, I’m thinking a shade like this with either white glossy bases or a mercury glass base like this from Pottery Barn… There are a lot of tutorials out there and I’ve been dying to try them. I just love the antique look of these bases. Okay, so what do you guys think? What would work best in the room? I had considered a printed shade at one point, but with our massive printed pillow… …I think a printed shade would be too much for me. I really want something beautiful that makes a statement, but a bit more classic and simple. Okay…so what’s your advice?

I like the color that the current lamp contributes to the room. If you go with the mercury glass, I wonder what it would look like to have a gold shade. Anything you do is going to be gorgeous! Reply
Linda @MyCraftyHomeLIfe says October 17, 2011 at 8:45 pm I think you should try to find the nightstands first, if you can. Will they be white, wood tone, or maybe a pop of the yellow (distressed?). Then, the reflective mercury could be cool. For the shade, I love burlap!!! Check out how this woman added a bit of pop to her shades http://www.classiccasualhome.com/2011/09/daughters-room-updates.html Not sure if I was helpful today? Reply
admin says October 18, 2011 at 9:20 pm You are always so helpful! As of right now, they will be white, but they’re a long way down the road. I’ve been searching and searching for some to refinish for the last year and haven’t found any. So, looks like we’re going to build them. So, I think mercury glass against the white would look good, maybe… Reply
Kristina says October 18, 2011 at 6:23 pm The thing about mercury glass is–I’m pretty sure–it has to be done on the back of a clear glass item, like the inside of a glass hurricane lamp, of the back of the glass plate of a frame, because all the tutorials I’ve seen have used looking glass spray, which only works on the other side (am I making sense?). I could be wrong though! I’m excited to see how it goes! I’m actually thinking of doing mercury glass on the panes of my door headboard. Reply
