UncategorizedBathroom Sources May 18, 2012Happy Friday morning, everybody! I’ve gotten so many questions about where we got certain pieces in the bathroom that I wanted to share that information on here. I did two bathroom source posts a while back (here and here), but that was a really long time ago and I know some of you haven’t found that. Plus, this is my favorite room redo we’ve done, so it’s fun for me to recap it 🙂 I’ve gotten the most questions about my favorite part of the bathroom, our vanity. We got this at a local Goodwill that specializes in furniture. It was $49! I still can’t believe it when I think about it – this is definitely the best bargain that we’ve ever gotten. Before we found this, we were planning to build a vanity. It could’ve turned out cool, I think, but it wouldn’t have had this character or old quality. Not to mention, it would’ve been more expensive and taken a lot more time. We didn’t even know what it was at first, but then my father-in-law (a lover of furniture) told us that it was an antique dry sink. I love how it has the upper counter and then the perfect little place for our vessel sink. We’ve gotten questions about having it custom made for the space or buying it at a high-end antique store and they make me smile. I think it goes to show that if you really shop around (and are patient in the process), there’s no telling what you’ll come across. Another favorite bargain that I’ve gotten almost as many questions about are the light fixtures over the mirror. These are outdoor lanterns from Lowe’s that we got for $25 each. Thanks to Kristen for finding them on their website! Here’s the link, if you’re interested. The last thing I’ve gotten major questions on is our vessel sink. This is just a basic white vessel sink. You can find them at Lowe’s (or any other home improvement store, probably) and many places online. But most are several hundred dollars. We went to Lowe’s to price these compared to $150 sinks we’d seen online. We happened across this one that was on clearance for $40 and then my bargainer husband asked for a discount because it was a floor model and got it for $30 or so. I must say, I was appalled that he was asking for a discount on something that was already so discounted, but hey, once he got it, I couldn’t argue with him. The best advice I have from this bathroom renovation is to be patient and shop around. We found some great deals that really helped our budget, but they took looking around. E-bay and Amazon can also be great resources. We got all of our bathroom hardware there. Our faucet, for example, is a Price Pfister model. I love the old water pump feel. I bid on this on E-bay and ended up getting for over $100 off the retail price. As far as tile goes, shop around before you buy it from a normal retail store. We have a Surplus Builder’s warehouse in Greenville that sells what contractors don’t use. We got this travertine tile for less per square foot than the cheapest option at Lowe’s. Speaking of travertine, do any of you have any good methods for cleaning it. When we installed it, we had no idea how difficult it is to clean. There is so much that you can’t use on it! I do love how it looks, though. It gave us the old brick feel we were looking for. Be encouraged, though! You can do a great reno on a small budget if you do the work yourself and shop some thrift stores and online. If y’all have any more questions, please leave them in the comments or e-mail me. I’m always happy to meet a reader and answer any questions you have! I respond to each comment and e-mail I get as quick as I can, so if you haven’t heard back, the response is coming! I’m going to go back to posting some more of the sunroom sources and redos after this. I’ve got a chair redo, some lamp makeovers, and burlap curtains coming! Hope y’all have a great Friday and a lovely, lovely weekend!
Josey says May 18, 2012 at 2:41 pm Hi Lindsay! We have marble in our bathroom, which like travertine, is difficult to find friendly cleaners for. We’ve found that Mrs. Meyers cleaners (found at Target) work well, smell nice, are all natural and don’t harm the porous stone products. Thanks for your direct and posted answer to my sink question! The bathroom looks great! We’re still working on our’s – the beadboard (which my husband custom made) still needs to be primed and painted, the medicine cabinet built, the toilet installed, the vanity built, and of course, the vessel sink installed – but I will be sure to send you pictures when we’re done. Like you, we shopped around for deals, decided to DIY on some things, and have been patient with the process (well, mostly!) Thanks again! Josey Reply

Laurel says May 20, 2012 at 5:08 pm Hey! Beautiful bathroom. I need a vanity like that for my bathroom because there isn’t a counter and really no room for one either. 🙁 Anyway, I’m not sure about cleaners (I do love Mrs. Meyers too though), but the best preventative thing is to squeegee it out after each shower. Hope this helps! Reply

Amanda says June 11, 2012 at 10:49 am I love your shower stall & would like to do something similar in our house. Do you know what the name/color of the tile is? Thanks so much! It’s absolutely beautiful! Reply
