UncategorizedAdding onto Our House and Gracie is Famous January 24, 2014First up, Ms. Gracie is famous, y’all. My sweet friend Julia from Cuckoo 4 Design has an awesome series called Living Pretty with your Pets. She asked if she could feature me and Gracie and I couldn’t say yes fast enough!!! This may seriously be my favorite post I’ve ever written. Who needs styling? I should just post about Gracie every day. Kidding…I promise. But I do love that girl and had a blast writing about her. I’m sharing what life is really like with a giant dog and a little bit of my personal pet journey. Gracie says, y’all have to go check it out. *** Now, onto some details of our master suite addition… When we bought this house, we knew it was too small. 1200 square feet with two beds and one bath. We didn’t need tons of space, but we did want three beds and two baths. In the neighborhood we wanted to live in, most of the houses are small. So we started looking knowing that we would most likely be adding a master suite. When we found this one, the floor plan was perfect for it. There was a huge yard behind it and not much side yard. So, we decided to go off the back. In planning the master suite, we had a couple of things to consider. The biggest was cost. We wanted a nice master suite, but needed to do it as cheaply as possible. So, that meant add as little square footage as possible and keep the addition in a square. Our contractor said it’s much cheaper to add on three straight walls verses a bunch of walls that jut in different directions, if that makes sense. Our contractor was really helpful in making the things we want fit in the “square.” I drew out probably a million different layouts, but he said none of them would work. Apparently I was forgetting stupid, unnecessary things like that the square footage of a room has to allow room for wall depth, or door openings. I mean, who needs it? Thankfully, we had a fabulous contractor, Nate, who knew things like this and we now have a finished addition with doors that don’t open into each other. We needed an area for laundry, so that got included with the closet you see above on the right. That area needs some prettying up and it’s on my list of future projects. Obviously, these are in-progress shots and we’ve gotten it cleaned up now, but no decorations. So updated photos to come! We ended up with a 12×14 bedroom. It feels very spacious for the things we need without having tons of extra room. Again, in progress. The vanity is now in the bathroom, thank goodness! And we actually have a bed 🙂 It’s very liveable now, but not remotely decorated. My goal was to decorate our main living spaces first, which we’re really close to finishing and then move on to the addition. The bedroom is on my list to finish this spring, though. I cannot wait! I’ve been gathering lots of inspiration and ideas that I’ll share soon. I’ve always loved board and batten, so we did floor to ceiling in here. I love the character it adds and think it’ll be a great backdrop to all of the color and texture I plan to add in here. This room is going to be a fun one to finish for sure. I have some exciting plans in store for it! I’ll be talking about our bathroom tomorrow. A bit more progress has been made in there and it is the first one we’re finishing…really soon! And I’ll be sharing the reasons behind and a peek into our his and hers closets on Sunday. I’ve decided to post this weekend to catch up from my sickness last week. It go me behind on Our Renovation Story! Y’all have a great weekend and check back for more from our bathroom and closets!

Mary | Lemon Grove Blog says January 25, 2014 at 1:20 am Your dog is adorable – seriously – SO CUTE! We’ve got friends with a ginormous dog like that 🙂 I love the paneling you added to that room, it adds tons of character. We’re in the middle of converting our attic to a third bedroom, so I definitely feel you on the dust factor, etc. We’re laying down the tile in the bathroom tonight! Inching closer to the finish line! 🙂 Reply
