Home DecorA New Kilim Rug for the Entry November 19, 2015Y’all know I’m the rug queen. The majority of questions I get about my spaces are, “Girl, where is that rug from?” And I always have to say an antique store or eBay. I know readers were always disappointed by this answer! Everyone is sometimes wary of bidding on eBay and not many have time to hunt 50 antique stores in the hope you’ll find that one beauty. I just hadn’t found a retailer that sold awesome rugs in my chosen style at comparable prices…until now. I love nothing more than an awesome Kilim or Persian pattern and a colorful punch to add to my usually white rooms. I often choose a rug first and let it really inspire the rest of the room’s color palette and design. I posted about the entry progress here and y’all will remember that my biggest issue with it was the tiny rug. I love this little rug, but it just looks lost in this room. I needed something bigger, but I didn’t want to lose the color and pattern. In walks Rug & Home. Have y’all heard of them? If you grew up in North or South Carolina, you’ve no doubt seen their cheery commercials or even been to one of their amazing show rooms. They’re a local company that has now developed an online presence, so you can purchase online instead of just in their stores. I went into their Gaffney, SC showroom a few weeks back to choose a rug for the entry. I was a little nervous because I’d seen the beautiful Kilim rugs online, but I really was worried the quality wouldn’t hold up in person. As I said above, I’ve searched and searched and I’d never found “real” Kilims other than buying vintage. I was blown away by their showroom. Not only do they have the largest selection of in-store rugs in the country, but the furniture…oh, the furniture! They gave me a tour and I was amazed at the unique pieces they have. They have everything from lamps and art to huge wooden armoires made from old doors of an Indian mansion. You may remember this photo from Instagram of me trying to choose the entry rug. Not only did I find one, but I found so many. I had the hardest time choosing. I ended up going with this beautiful, blue-based kilim. Choosing the blue surprised me a bit because this room is already blue-gray and white. I had gone in expecting to choose something with a red or warm-toned background. But this one stole my heart. It’s a much bigger rug at 5×8, which ends up being the perfect size for this space. I’d gone in planning to pick a runner, but they encouraged me to choose a 5×8 based off of the room’s dimensions. They said that it would make more of a statement when you first walked into our home and I knew they were right! It’s the perfect size in here. Not only is it the perfect size, but it’s the same quality as the vintage kilims I’ve bought in the past. It’s 100% wool, flat-woven, and reversible. And best of all, it’s very comparable in price to other kilims of this quality I’ve seen elsewhere. This specific rug was $480, which is a great price for the large size, quality, and it being one-of-a-kind. The Rug & Home story is really amazing and it really speaks to quality control. It’s a family-owned and operated business. They source the rugs from artisans they know personally and have built relationships with. That’s the reason their prices are lower on these amazing rugs because by sourcing directly from the artisans, there’s no middle man. Y’all know I love reasonably priced unique items! These rugs make up their Exclusive Collection and each one is amazing. Some are one-of-a-kind, like my blue beauty here and those can only be purchased in the store right now. But they do have a lot of their Exclusive Collection up online! My plan is to pull the “detail” colors from the rug in the art and accessories. We’ve searched for a long table to go along the wall right inside the door and haven’t found one nearly long enough that isn’t too deep. We’re building one that will be the exact dimensions we need. I’m really going to make that wall a major focal point with matching lamps on each end and big, statement art leaning against the wall. I want several big art pieces, which isn’t possible to hang as I pictured it with the board and batten, but don’t worry, we’ll secure it! This room is going to be the perfect introduction to our house! I can’t wait to see it finished. I’ll share the room as it starts coming together more next week! While mine is one-of-a-kind, you can find similar flat woven rugs on their website here. And if you’re local, head into the store for an amazing selection of reasonably priced one-of-a-kind rugs!
Julia at Home on 129 Acres says November 19, 2015 at 1:49 pm What a great rug. Rug & Home sounds like a great find. I feel like you’ve done your usual decorating process, just a little bit in reverse here. The grey, green and blue tones in the rug are totally picked up in your doors and wall colours. It’s exactly the approach you described with the living room rug of pulling out the secondary colours. I’m enjoying seeing your house come together. Thanks for bringing us along. Reply

Anita says November 23, 2015 at 12:55 pm Oh my goodness, I LOVE that rug, and it looks fabulous in your space!! I have gone by the R & H here in Asheville, but have never been in. Definitely need to go by. I do have some great sources for authentic and affordable kilims, as well as Turkish and Persians directly from friends in Turkey if you are interested in some other resources:-) Reply
