UncategorizedA Christmas Gift for the Mudroom January 3, 2012We’re working on redoing our sunroom and in the corner of the new room will be a mudroom. Remember my mudroom inspiration post? I was hoping to find a church pew or something similar for our mudroom bench like this photo that I posted from Pinterest: My husband got me this deacon’s bench from my favorite local antique store for Christmas (I love this store – it has thrift store pricing, but AWESOME stuff). I love the green color. It’s branching out for me, but it’ll be against a white wall, so I think the pop of color will work well. And of course, it has my chippy paint! Chippy paint makes me immediately feel like a piece has history, like it has a story to tell. I love that. I know this piece is old and was at one point an actual deacon’s bench in a church. Beyond that, I don’t know what history and stories it holds, but it’s intriguing to imagine. I want to hang a shelf with hooks (much like the inspiration image above this) above the bench. I’m ready to get started on it and have a real mudroom! Maybe that’ll help me with my organization goal for 2012…
Brianne says January 31, 2012 at 9:11 pm Hi there, I stumbled upon this looking for mudroom ideas. Love the inspiration! I too wanted to replicate a very similar look in my mudroom. In fact, we found a gorgeous 10 foot long deacons bench on craigslist. Beware of the chippy paint. My 20 month old daughter’s blood test came back with a high lead level and we traced it back to that bench. We bought a lead test kit at a local paint store. After only a month in the house, lead paint was detected everywhere. Walls, baseboard, floor and trim. Unfortunately, our only option is to have the bench professionally stripped of all paint or to paint over it, both solutions will result in a bench that no longer has that “chippy” look that we all love. Just a word of caution! Reply

You could always repaint and sand it down some to get that chippy look. It doesn’t always work out as well as the original finish, but it comes close! Thanks again! Reply
